The award recognizes excellence in astrobiology, technology, exploration, public engagement, and mentoring future scientists. New research suggests that theobromine, a natural compound found in dark chocolate, may be linked to slower biological ageing. It is early days, but it is encouraging to see that everyday foods continue to offer intriguing clues about healthier and longer lives. A small reason to enjoy dark chocolate with a bit more appreciation.

Just finished this one.
A couple of factual inaccuracies (no, 'G' in physics does not mean 100 times your weight - it is earth's gravitational constant 'g' in this context, and yes, chimps do actually teach one another), plus some idiocy no fault of the author (chimps don't understand 'zero' dear researchers, true, but neither did humans until a millennium or so ago)...
But overall, a well-researched informative read - highly recommend.
A younger but fully grown-ass person working behind the counter of a bookshop had to ask me how to spell 'traitor' this afternoon.
Tell me our brains aren't being turned to shit by social media and the endless AI-style lazy paths so accessible in the first world today.

For global average temperatures to stabilize at less than 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, humanity needs to achieve 43% greenhouse gas emissions cuts by 2030. But progress on climate action has stagnated in recent years, global GHG emissions are yet to peak, and our remaining carbon budget is dwindling.
Above 1.5°C of warming, we risk passing critical tipping points in natural Earth systems, triggering self-perpetuating changes that could shift the planet out of the habitable zone for humanity and for life as we know it. Even with rapid, large-scale action on climate change, crossing some tipping points may now be unavoidable.

A really interesting paper just came out in Science a few weeks ago: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adv9472
The authors compared satellite measurements of #LightPollution from #VIIRS_DNB to 2.6 million bird calls recorded at 7,824 locations around the world. They show not only that birds sing longer at both morning and night in areas that are brighter, but that the response is different for different species.
For example, species with larger eyes are more strongly affected, and species that nest in cavities (protected from light exposure) are less affected.
Very cool work!

SETI Institute Senior Research Scientist Janice Bishop and University of Massachusetts Engineering Professor Mario Parente analyzed orbital hyperspectral images from the Compact Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, producing a detailed mineral map at the tens-of-meters scale of the crater documenting deposits of clays and carbonates signaling abundant water on ancient Mars.

I had no task to perform: no thinking, no publication writing... I only had to accept some hundred dollars. I politely refused, quoting the concept of "scientific method".
