Earlier in the month, I mentioned a butcherbird nest ( https://mastodon.social/@Cheeseness/117385167599372983 ). I got my first glimpse of the chicks this morning. A silent wide mouthed trio, with a clear dominant sibling

Three baby butcherbirds in a nest, seen through a gap between leaves. On the left, one stands on the rim of the nest, looking out . In the middle on the far side, another looks away from the camera with their eyes closed. On the right, a third has their head tilted upward, ready just in case breakfast arrives unexpectedly

Vultures eat anthrax, botulism, rabies, & cholera for breakfast.

Their stomach acid is among the most corrosive in the animal kingdom, with a pH around 1, low enough to dissolve the bones, hide, & pathogens of dead animals that would kill almost anything else.

A vulture eating a diseased carcass isn't a vector for disease, it's the end of the line. The disease chain ends in the vulture's gut, & that's pretty hardcore.

When vulture populations crashed in India in the 1990s, rotting livestock carcasses sat where vultures used to clean them.

Feral dogs and rats took over the cleanup, both of which actually do spread rabies. Researchers later linked the vulture collapse to roughly 500,000 deaths in India over the following decade.

The same collapse is now underway in sub-Saharan Africa. 6 of 11 African vulture species are threatened with extinction, primarily from poisoned poaching baits.

The animals nobody finds cute are doing more public health work than most of the species we actively protect.

Surprise guest of the day was a Redwinged Blackbird, and it is so nice to finally see some more woodpecker action. Even a Downy came. These guys all hang around but they have not come to cameras or feeders in the last couple of weeks because nature is full of food for them. For those that may be wondering - I am working on the calendar this week and hope to be done by the weekend. #birds

Sweet bird is an acrylic painting in contemporary square format painted by artist Karen Kaspar. A cute little bird is sitting on a branch and is looking to the right side. The bird seems to be smiling.
The inspiration for this bird portrait was a female house sparrow sitting in a bush in our garden. But I was in the mood for some soft candy pastel colors. So it became a fantasy bird in colorful shades of teal, yellow and pink. The abstract background echoes these colors.

Two kestrels are showing fighting in grassland. One is on the ground, it's wings up as it tries to take off. The other is in the air above, talons stretching down as it descends to attack.

A flashback to November 2017. I was shooting some video for YouTube on my Canon G7X Mark II and I had a little friend stop by... #photography #bird #birds

A winter scene in a wooded area. In the background snow covers the ground, the sky is overcast and barren trees dot the landscape. A bicycle is seen in the mid ground. The subject is a close up of a Canon G7X Mark II compact camera with a small mountain chickadee perched atop it.

What happens when you put up one of those cute bird houses.

Source: https://theycantalk.com/

A four panel comic.

Panel 1: little bird staying on the slanted roof a bird house, exclaiming "woha!".

Panel 2: zoomed out so we can see a nearby branch too, where another bird stands. First bird asks "You made this?".

Panel 3: zoomed in second bird's head. It seems to have a panicked expression.

Panel 4: second bird looks away, and lies "yes".

Habt einen schönen Tag!

A female sparrow with soft, fluffy plumage sits on a slender branch. The cute little bird is looking to the right. The delicate feathers of the little bird are painted in different shades of brown with loose, soft brushstrokes. The background is painted abstractly in warm brown, purple and earthy tones.
Sparrow meeting part two is an acrylic painting in portrait format hand-painted by the artist Karen Kaspar.
This painting is part of my mini-series of three paintings - Sparrow meeting One, Two and Three. Each of these paintings shows a female sparrow sitting on a branch. Each of these pictures can be hung on its own. However, the three paintings can also be perfectly combined into a triptych and hung together on a wall for a joint sparrow meeting.

Watching you is a detail in landscape format from my watercolour painting I am watching you, which I painted in portrait format. In this detail, which only shows the head and part of the owl's upper body, the focus is on the eyes, which scrutinise the viewer intensely.
Here is the description of the original in portrait format:
I am watching you is a watercolor painting in portrait format painted by the artist Karen Kaspar. An owl is sitting on a branch. It has lowered its head and looks at the viewer with a penetrating gaze from its bright orange eyes. The plumage is painted with loose brushstrokes in shades of blue and brown. The background is white with splashes of colour in the same shades as the owl's feathers.

The image depicts a serene scene of a sunset over the ocean with birds flying in the sky. The sun is partially obscured by clouds, casting a warm glow on the water's surface. The sky is a gradient of colors from blue to orange, and the birds are silhouetted against this backdrop. There are no visible texts or educational content, and the setting appears to be a natural, untouched environment. The task involves describing the visual elements without any additional context or information.

Cuando el águila pescadora se lanza hacia su presa, coloca sus garras delante de su cabeza en el último instante antes de zambullirse. De esta manera, estas reciben el impacto y puede seguir viendo a su presa, a la que puede agarrar inmediatamente. #aves #birds
