I emailed Neil Tyson Degrasse asking him if lasagna crosses the event horizon of a black hole does it become spaghetti?
Frankly, it’s depressing how one billionaire can fuck up the night sky for the rest of humanity and our collective ability to try to understand more about the universe.
The new generation of Starlink satellites create even more interference than the old ones.

Onwards & Upwards for Perseverance rover.
Judging by the wheel tracks in this roughly processed post-drive tiled-NavCam from Sol 1342, the drive direction to site 62.2066 appears to be close to west-southwest. The updated map and drive data (JSON) are unlikely to be released until after the holiday weekend, so I'll share the drive data and map as soon as they are available.

Astronomers have a love-hate relationship with the atmosphere: it's great for, you know, not dying, but it blurs astronomical images. In the latest episode of Chasing Starlight we tell you the inner workings of adaptive optics, a technique where we use powerful lasers and fast shape-shifting mirrors to measure and correct atmospheric turbulence:
#Introduction Hi #fediverse ! We’re the European Southern Observatory, and we design, build and operate ground-based telescopes.
One of them is our Extremely Large Telescope, currently under construction in #Chile. It will have a 39 m mirror, and its rotating enclosure will weigh 6100 tonnes, or about 700 mastodons!
We’re looking forward to chatting with all of you about #astronomy

After Two SpaceX Explosions, U.K. Officials Ask FAA to Change Starship Flight Plans

Facing a significant increase in the number of SpaceX launches, British officials detailed their concerns about the safety of Turks and Caicos and other Caribbean territories after debris from an earlier failed launch littered beaches and roads.

#HappyNewYear 🎉 Boost your #NewYear resolution with adaptive optics. By deforming a thin flexible mirror a thousand times per second you can correct atmospheric turbulence and get sharp astronomical images!

Need more galaxies in your feed? Of course you do.
Over the break I made @ArpBot, mostly because I thought the name "Arp Bot" was funny.
It posts an image of a galaxy in Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies twice a day. Images are from the archives of professional observatories and the original 1966 catalog. I curated the images and wrote the image descriptions and most of the alt text.
Give it a follow!
Astronomers have long thought that the upper clouds of Jupiter, which create the planet’s iconic pale brown belts, are made of frozen ammonia.
But the joint efforts between an amateur astronomer with his backyard telescope 🔭 and professional scientists with ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), have now shown that they're actually made of something completely different 😲
Most likely, they are made of ammonium hydrosulphide mixed with smog, although vertical convection can sometimes bring ammonia ice clouds to the top.

A Path North
* Image Credit & Copyright: Mario Konang
Explanation:
What happens if you keep going north? The direction north on the Earth, the place on your horizon below the northern spin pole of the Earth -- around which other stars appear to slowly swirl, will remain the same. This spin-pole-of-the-north will never move from its fixed location on the sky -- night or day -- and its height will always match your latitude. The further north you go, the higher the north spin pole will appear. Eventually, if you can reach the Earth's North Pole, the stars will circle a point directly over your head. Pictured, a four-hour long stack of images shows stars trailing in circles around this north celestial pole. The bright star near the north celestial pole is Polaris, known as the North Star. The bright path was created by the astrophotographer's headlamp as he zigzagged up a hill just over a week ago in Lower Saxony, Germany. The astrophotographer can be seen, at times, in shadow. Actually, the Earth has two spin poles -- and much the same would happen if you started below the Earth's equator and went south.

📣 On Saturday 21 June, it's going to be a very busy night in Göttingen - the Night of Science! This channel is going to be equally busy, with a daily countdown giving you previews of activities you'll find at our location. These posts will predominantly be in German.
If this is a bit too verbose for you, you can mute or filter the hashtag #ndwgoecountdown to not see the daily countdown posts.

PRESS RELEASE: A research team led by Dr. Sofia Sheikh of the SETI Institute, in collaboration with the Characterizing Atmospheric Technosignatures project and the Penn State Extraterrestrial Intelligence Center, set out to answer a simple question: If an extraterrestrial civilization existed with technology similar to ours, would they be able to detect Earth and evidence of humanity? If so, what signals would they detect, and from how far away? https://youtu.be/Pdg2x3NP2ds
Overdue #Introduction:
Hi, I am one of those computer touchers, located in #Berlin, in my late 20s, and this is my first time on any social media.
I have lots of interests (yes #ADHD), like #Vegan #Cooking, #Photography (often #Pets), anything #Space, #Gaming and #GameDev, recently #3DPrinting, trying to do good, the list goes on.
Really enjoying this online space so far, hope to meet and talk to more awesome people on here.
Also some sample pictures I like (with alt-text, of course).

A high-ranking NASA official warned his employees to “use discretion” in public when displaying badges or emblems that identify them as federal workers — part of an effort, the agency says, to protect its staff amid “stories of possible harassment.”
