"Intimate Letters" Janacek/Martinu: String Quartets Douban
Emerson String Quartet genre: Classical
release date 2009-04-06 publisher: Decca (UMO)
《记事本-爱默生弦乐四重奏》When the Emerson String Quartet releases an album, one s expectation of excellence isn t met it s exceeded. The Emersons exploration of Czech chamber music on this new recording further burnishes a lustrous reputation. The Emersons perform at a superior level of intensity, integrity, energy, and commitment demonstrated since its formation in 1976. It now brings these qualities to the first two of Janácek s String Quartets and 3 Madrigals for violin and viola by Martinu. Intimate Letters (Quartet no. 2) is based on Janácek s letters to his muse, Kamila Stösslová. We are the fortunate beneficiaries of Janácek s unrequited passion! This passionate piece also plays a key role in the Daniel-Day Lewis film, The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Janacek: String Quartets Nos.1 & 2; Smetana: String Quartet No.1 Douban
Jerusalem Quartet genre: Classical
release date 2014-01-14 publisher: HARMONIA MUNDI
The acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet's latest release focuses works by two giants of Czech music. Though Smetana, the founder of the Czech national school, and Janacek, his spiritual heir, are best known as operatic composers, they also left strongly autobiographical chamber works. Composed when he was already profoundly deaf, Smetana's String Quartet No.1 looks back over the different stages of his life. Also written late in life, Janacek's second quartet, subtitled Intimate Letters, describes his unfulfilled passion for Kamila Stosslova, his junior by 38 years.

Gidon Kremer / Marta Argerich genre: Classical
release date 1991-02-08 publisher: Deutsche Grammophon
Bartok: Violin Sonata No. 1; Janacek: Sonata; Messiaen: Theme and Variations Gidon Kremer, violin; Martha Argerich, piano. Deutsche Grammophon 427 351-2; CD.
Gidon Kremer and Martha Argerich are ideal partners in this program of forceful, searching and variably acidic early 20th-century works. The collaboration works especially well in Bartok's First Sonata (1921); this reading in many ways outshines that of an earlier pair of stars, David Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter. With their characteristic flexibility, Mr. Kremer and Ms. Argerich capture the near hysteria of the work's first movement, the uneasily subdued passions of the second and the throaty vehemence of the finale. And they convey that broad emotional range with coherence and unity of purpose.
The Janacek Sonata (1914-21) also benefits from an unusually intense reading; indeed, some listeners may find this account overwrought and too emotionally draining.
The aphoristic Messiaen Variations (1932) are little more than a filler, but an illuminating one. They share the Bartok's dark atmosphere and the Janacek's melodic inventiveness, with a touch of Debussian harmonic mistiness in which one hears the roots of Mr. Messiaen's later style.
