动画以《新世界福音战士》中的角色为原型，一改原作沉重严肃的气氛，描述了轻松愉快的校园生活。制作方首次采用了3D的Q版造型，配以实景背景和2D拼接，造就了多元化的绘画风格。

TV2003重制版，是为庆祝EVA企业十周年而重置的版本，画面和音效都有提升。在TV95版的基础上重制了21-24四话重制的部分称作“Video”。加上原有的26集，03版共26话，一共30集。这个版本中21与22，23与24，25与26，27与28都是相同的内容。只不过21，23，25，27和原来一样，而22，24，26，28中增添了一些新的东西。
