The film is inspired by the story of Hao Wanzhong, a policeman in Ordos, Inner Mongolia. Following his career, through the inner workings of a modern Chinese police department in Inner Mongolia. While rising through the ranks Hao Wanzhong successfully solves difficult cases. His story carries us through vicious murders, corruption, and social unrest, against a backdrop of majestic winter landscapes, opulent cities and the raw industrial districts of this remote region of China. Hao's obsession with detective work leads to his meteoric rise from beat cop to district police chief, however his maniacal dedication comes at a cost, a cost to his family and ultimately leads to his death. - Written by Sean O'Dea

1894年，蓄谋侵华已久的日军在中国领海内肆意制造事端，昏庸胆小的西太后为息事宁人，委派北洋大臣李鸿章（王秋颖）及其亲信、“济远”号管带方伯谦（周文彬）等人去与日军讲和，傲慢无礼的日军却将中国商船击落。以“致远”号管带邓世昌（李默然）为代表的爱国官兵两次请命同日军作战，李鸿章均拒绝，并借邓世昌揭露方伯谦渎职之机将其革职。
日军不宣而战，民愤四起，顶不住压力的李鸿章重新启用邓世昌。海战中，贪生怕死的北洋水师右翼总兵刘步蟾（李颉）打错旗号，致使北洋舰队出师失利，旗舰被日军击沉。邓世昌见势立即挂起帅旗，替代旗舰指挥作战，率领“致远”号官兵与日军展开殊死大战，行为可歌可泣。

黑暗的年代，世道离乱，人的尊严和生命比纸还贱。拥有悲苦人生的中学生林道静（谢芳 饰）一度试图蹈海自杀，关键时刻却被来自北大的余永泽（于是之 饰）救下，从此她的人生有了曙光和转机。因不满校方对学生运动的态度，林愤而辞职，辗转来至北平见到了余永泽。几经周折与磨难，两个有情人终于走到一起。无奈随着局势的风云变幻和长时间近距离的相处，林和余二人的思想分歧越来越大，在一次集会上，林邂逅共产党人卢嘉川（康泰 饰），她从对方手中得到许多进步书籍，共产主义的先进思想也让她恍如大梦初醒一般，渐渐明了存在于世的意义，以及人生奋斗的方向。从此，林道静走上了一条极不平凡且充满危险和考验的革命之路……
本片根据杨沫的同名自传体长篇小说改编。

1940年代初，浙东某山村的童养媳竺春花（谢芳）因不堪虐待逃入某个越剧戏班，与教戏师傅的女儿邢月红（曹银娣）结为姐妹。不久，攻旦的春花和习生的月红双双成为戏班台柱。
戏班在绍兴演出时，当地豪绅企图凌辱月红，为掩护她，春花被人绑在桥头示众，邢师傅也被打致死，临终前，邢师傅嘱附两人要“认认真真唱戏，清清白白做人”。戏班到上海后很快唱红，戏院唐经理想借上演淫秽剧目捞取更多银子，被春花严词拒绝，但月红却贪慕虚荣堕落成为唐经理的玩物，姐妹因此反目，但两人的情分并没到此终结。

In his second feature, director/co-writer Hao pays rousing tribute to 'Er-ren-tai', a form of saucy musical performance closely associated with Hao's home region in the north-west near the Mongolian border. This colourfully accessible slice of backwater ethnography follows hapless hero Tiedan (Feng Si) from joyous childhood through to a maturity notable for an eventfully unorthodox love-life. Taking their cue from the Er-ren-tai songs themselves, which express passionate feelings in bursts of hyper-stylised intensity, Hao and his Korean editor Baek Seung Hoon sock over short scenes packed with freewheeling incident and comedy.

The Dragon King perverts the course of nature and is punished with execution; the emperor tried to step in to prevent it happening, but he didn’t allow for the power of dreams. Now Li is lying on his deathbed, beset by stray ghosts. Can he be saved? The storytelling explores several layers of "reality," but coalesces into an image of China’s perennial absurdity: a new-old world where peace always breeds wealth. Brilliant, straight-faced political satire. The "ungrammatical" title, by the way, references a Chinese movie of 1927.
