Peking, 1948. A winter night. A man returns home to find a letter awaiting him written by a woman before her death. in the letter she tells him the story of her love for him -a life-long passion that has not diminished over time, but one that he has never known. her story spans 18 years from the moment she -then a 13 year-old girl- sets her eyes on her new neighbor. she tells their brief but passionate love in her youthi the hardship she goes through raising their child alone, and their final encounter after the war, during which the man fails tor ecognize her and one which leaves her in despair. Bayinbulag and Somiya are brought up, from a young age, as brother and sister by their adoptive grandmother. The three live happily in a yurt on the Mongolian steppes. Just before Bayinbulag is to leave for the city, to be trained as a vet, the grandmother suggests that Bayinbulag and Somiya should eventually marry. Bayinbulag, now training to be a musician, stays away for long periods of time without communicating with Somiya. He finally comes back expecting to marry her.

A group of young people have problems operating a small hotel.

清朝末年，欧洲足球队海盗队来华时和驻华外国使馆联队进行了一场比赛。比赛引来了大批民众和朝廷官员观看，海盗队获胜后，队长哈里为博取女友詹尼一笑，竟然用力将球踢向围观的群众和朝廷官员。就在一众外国人哈哈大笑之时，人群中窜出一名大汉，他叫周天（张丰毅 饰），他以高强的球技回敬了哈里。詹尼见此教唆哈里向中方挑战，于是一场中外足球赛大战在即。原来周天是一位曾留学牛津大学并曾担任清朝翰林院编修的进步青年，他深知中、外足球水平的据，单凭一己之力很难为中国人出一口气。于是，周天踏上了访寻民间球侠、为国增光的道路。

Since the establishment of the bamboo weaving cooperative, the appearance of Zhulin Village has changed significantly. Visitors seeking to learn, inspectors, interviewers, and tourists placing orders have been coming in an endless stream. They eat all day and all month long, leading to frequent quarrels, fights, and cases of alcohol poisoning, causing the smart and capable cafeteria manager, Xiao Wangfa, to be driven to tears and indescribable suffering. Once, when Vice Secretary Guo of the Provincial Committee came to the village for an inspection, the lunch prepared for him was eaten by the leaders from the county. Xiao Wangfa had no choice but to serve simple home-cooked meals like mung bean porridge, steamed buns, and peanuts, anxiously preparing for punishment. Unexpectedly, Vice Secretary Guo was very pleased with the meal, and the villagers of Zhulin saw hope from this incident.

忠厚老实的老奎（陈强 饰）和儿子（陈佩斯 饰）在改革的浪潮中下海了。岂料父子俩开店不成，在下海浪潮中被呛得人仰马翻。不甘心失败的老奎拿出了积蓄的两千元，买来了一辆四十年代老车，准备干出租。谁知好不容易买回来的车子竟然不能办理营运执照，父子俩再次傻了眼。恰巧这时某特区的任总经理想用老奎父子俩的车子开办旅游项目，于是和他们签订了特区开发合同。父子俩在特区人生地不熟，开着那辆老旧的汽车，上演了一幕幕既搞笑、又心酸的闹剧……

老奎（陈强 饰）和儿子二子（陈佩斯 饰）在深圳闯荡一番后，回到了北京。见多识广的父子俩决定在北京创业，老奎倾尽积蓄开办了一家卡拉OK厅，并请来他们在车站结识的来京闯荡的小歌手小依（傅艺伟 饰）。卡拉OK厅生意火爆，父子俩渐渐有了钱。二子爱上了小依，小依一方面和二子约会，一方面又傍着老奎给她买这买那，另一方面又和另外一个台湾大款纠葛不清，周旋在三个男人中间……
