在这敌强我弱的态势下，毛泽东在延安运筹帷幄，作出战略决策，将山东野战军和华中野战军合并，组建华东野战军，集中兵力南征北战，消灭蒋介石的有生力量。
蒋介石为一举全歼山东解放军，调集汤恩伯兵团20余万人以张灵甫74师为前锋由南向北齐头并进，又命令济南的李仙洲兵团由北向南推至莱芜、新泰一线，企图南北夹击我军。陈粟决定留沈振新部在南线阻击，大部队则围歼李仙洲部，著名的莱芜战役打响。莱芜5万敌军企图向吐丝口方向突围。沈振新率部飞兵攻占吐丝口，截断敌军退路，全歼李仙洲兵团。蒋军不甘失败又以张灵甫为先锋，向我山东蒙阴县进攻，妄图聚歼我华野于沂蒙山区。陈粟于百万军中取上将首级的气魄，围歼74师，张灵甫却不顾死活，占据孟良崮，妄图以中心开花、四壁合围的战法置我军于死地，两军72万人在小小的孟 良崮山区激战三天三夜，血流成河，尸横遍野。最后，沈振新部搭人梯攀上悬崖绝壁，攻占孟良崮主锋，直捣张灵甫指挥部石洞。张灵甫负隅顽抗，决以杀身成仁却被我军乱枪击毙。
