Following the success of 2014’s Birdman (Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director), director Alejandro G. Iñárritu pushes the limits of film making with the survival epic The Revenant. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, Wolf of Wall Street), Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises) and shot in the frozen Canadian wilderness with only natural lighting, The Revenant is a story of loss, revenge and resilience in the face of impossible odds against the furies of man and nature itself. The film is heavily favored to be a critical darling as awards season gets under way. Director Iñárritu has chosen to forgo almost all dialogue in favor of a gorgeous soundscape and a sweeping score. A film of this magnitude deserves a composer who understands creative artistry and unbridled passion. Japanese master and Oscar winner Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor) fits the bill perfectly. Along with fellow Yellow Magic Orchestra member and frequent collaborator Alva Noto, Sakamoto has created a gripping soundtrack that is sure to be a treat for the winter crowds. Bryce Dessner (writer for Kronos Quartet and the LA Phil) also supplies additional music.

It was nearly 20 years ago, back in 1997, that the Buena Vista Social Club became an improbable worldwide sensation: a group of mainly elderly (and some younger) Cuban musicians, performing traditional son music for an album produced by Ry Cooder. The combustible success of that first project — which only transpired by accident to begin with — led to a cottage industry of lovely artifacts, including a beautiful 1998 documentary by Wim Wenders and a string of solo albums from its leading artists (not to mention 2010’s Afrocubism, the fruit of World Circuit chief Nick Gold’s original idea for what became the Buena Vista Social Club’s first album). Since the group’s initial successes, several of its unforgettable artists — including guitarist and singer Compay Segundo, pianist Ruben Gonzalez, singer Ibrahim Ferrer, percussionist Miguel “Anga” Díaz (father to the sensational new twin-sister duo Ibeyi) and bassist Orlando “Cachaíto” López — have passed away. The remaining Buena Vista artists are saying farewell with an international “Adiós” tour this year, so it must have seemed like a good time for World Circuit to dig through its archives. The result is Lost and Found, a compilation of studio recordings (from the original Buena Vista Social Club sessions made at Havana’s Egrem Studios in 1996, and from a string of dates through the late 1990s and early 2000s) and live cuts from throughout the artists’ touring career. These tracks have all been taken out of the vault and dusted off only for this occasion, but fans of the Buena Vista artists’ earlier projects will find more than enough gems here. They include “Macusa,” featuring guitarists and singers Eliades Ochoa and Compay Segundo; the cool, trancelike Afro-Cuban jazz of “Black Chicken 37″ with Díaz and López; smoky-voiced singer Omara Portuondo in “Tiene Sabor” and the 1930s Cuban chestnut “Lágrimas Negras”; the blazing horns in “Mami Me Gusto,” featuring Ibrahim Ferrer; and the razor-sharp dance rhythms in “Guajira En F,” featuring Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos, one of Buena Vista’s younger performers (now 63). If it turns out that this is the year we do say a final goodbye to the Buena Vista collective, Lost And Found provides a gorgeous reminder of what made it so famous to begin with — and what we’ll all be missing.

Björk has released her new album Vulnicura almost two months ahead of schedule a fter it was leaked online. Tracks from the album were posted online just days after the Icelandic singer announced the title and tracklist. It is being rolled out on iTunes around the world over the next 24 hours, though the vinyl and CD are being kept back for the original March release date. Serving as the follow-up to 2011’s multimedia project Biophilia, the nine-track effort features production from Arca and The Haxan Cloak. Additionally, Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons sings on the track called “Atom Dance”. Meanwhile, Bjork has written an open letter about the album and its creation, and you can read it below. "dear websitefolks , fans , tweeters and my music supporters on all the sorts of www : vulnicura will be rolling out worldwide over the next 24 hours !! i am so grateful you are still interested in my work !! i appreciate every little bit !!! i wanted to tell you the tale of making of this album i guess i found in my lap one year into writing it a complete heartbreak album . kinda surprised how thoroughly i had documented this in pretty much accurate emotional chronology …. like 3 songs before a break up and three after . so the anthropologist in me sneaked in and i decided to share them as such . first i was worried it would be too self indulgent but then i felt it might make it even more universal . and hopefully the songs could be a help , a crutch to others and prove how biological this process is : the wound and the healing of the wound . psychologically and physically . it has a stubborn clock attached to it . there is a way out and then a magic thing happened to me : as i lost one thing something else entered . alejandro contacted me late summer 2013 and was interested in working with me . it was perfect timing . to make beats to the songs would have taken me 3 years ( like on vespertine ) but this enchanted arca would visit me repeatedly and only few months later we had a whole album !!! it is one of the most enjoyable collaboration i have had ! i then went ahead and wrote string and choir arrangements and recorded them in iceland towards the end of the album i started looking around for a mixing engineer and was introduced by a mutual friend of ours , robin carolan to the haxan cloak . he mixed the album and also made a beat for one half of “family” . together with chris elms the engineer we kinda formed a band during the mixing process and this is the album we made !!! i do hope you enjoy it i would like to thank this overqualified little team ( where roles often blurred ) . i also would like to thank robin , his generous approvals gave me more courage to complete this as is . and my group of songswapping / dj friends : the right tune can truly cure : ta for those sonic ointments but most of all i would like to thank my team : james merry , derek birkett and emma birkett . rosemary and elisa . this album could not have been done without you" (via Björk’s Facebook)
