Bill Evans genre: Jazz
release date 1961-01-01 publisher: Riverside
One of two classic records (the other being Waltz for Debby) culled from perfectionist pianist Bill Evans' stand at the Village Vanguard in 1961. The album cover features the by-line "featuring Scott LaFaro", the bass player whose accidental death soon after highlighted his immense contributions to jazz. Absolutely timeless.

Herbie Hancock genre: Jazz
release date 2007-09-25 publisher: Verve
This Amazon.com exclusive version of River: The Joni Letters includes two bonus tracks, "All I Want" featuring Sonya Kitchell and "A Case of You." The legendary pianist and innovator Herbie Hancock explores the words and music of another musical pioneer, Joni Mitchell, on his first new studio recording for Verve since 1998's GRAMMY® award-winning Gershwin's World. Inspired in equal parts by Mitchell's poetic lyrics and unique melodies, Hancock and saxophone giant Wayne Shorter play with a restraint and elegance that achieves a perfect balance between the adventurous aesthetics of jazz improvisation and the emotional directness of the finest Adult Pop music. Hancock builds upon his (and Shorter's) previous collaborations with Ms. Mitchell to create a sound that will appeal not only to fans of both artists, but to the listener familiar with the work of Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae and the other brilliant guest vocalists featured on this session. River: The Joni Letters is the perfect CD for the music fan looking for something new that's based in the familiar.

Charles Mingus genre: Jazz
release date 1999-02-16 publisher: Sony
Charles Mingus' debut for Columbia, Mingus Ah Um is a stunning summation of the bassist's talents and probably the best reference point for beginners. While there's also a strong case for The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady as his best work overall, it lacks Ah Um's immediate acccessibility and brilliantly sculpted individual tunes. Mingus' compositions and arrangements were always extremely focused, assimilating individual spontaneity into a firm consistency of mood, and that approach reaches an ultra-tight zenith on Mingus Ah Um. The band includes longtime Mingus stalwarts already well versed in his music, like saxophonists John Handy, Shafi Hadi, and Booker Ervin, trombonists Jimmy Knepper and Willie Dennis, pianist Horace Parlan, and drummer Dannie Richmond. Their razor-sharp performances tie together what may well be Mingus' greatest, most emotionally varied set of compositions. At least three became instant classics, starting with the irrepressible spiritual exuberance of signature tune "Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul," taken in a hard-charging 6/8 and punctuated by joyous gospel shouts. "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" is a slow, graceful elegy for Lester Young, who died not long before the sessions. The sharply contrasting "Fables of Faubus" is a savage mockery of segregationist Arkansas governor Orval Faubus, portrayed musically as a bumbling vaudeville clown (the scathing lyrics, censored by skittish executives, can be heard on Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus). The underrated "Boogie Stop Shuffle" is bursting with aggressive swing, and elsewhere there are tributes to Mingus' three most revered influences: "Open Letter to Duke" is a suite of three tunes; "Bird Calls" is inspired by Charlie Parker; and "Jelly Roll" is an idiosyncratic yet affectionate nod to jazz's first great composer, Jelly Roll Morton. It simply isn't possible to single out one Mingus album as definitive, but Mingus Ah Um comes the closest.

Featuring: John McLaughlin, Airto Moreira, Charlie Haden, Billy Cobham, Jerry Goodman, Mahalakshimi, Badal Roy, Dave Liebman When John McLaughlin arrived in New York from his native England , the twenty-seven year old guitarist was virtually unknown in the United States. But in no time at all he would find himself an integral part of some of the most important jazz activity then taking place in this country, with a rapidly growing reputation that would soon have him acknowledged as the foremost guitar player of the 1970s. When My Goals Beyond was released in 1971 Down Beat praised it as 3a compelling new view of the most exciting guitarist playing today,2 and Robert Palmer called it in Rolling Stone 3a quietly beautiful LP, certainly McLaughlin1s best.2 As the years have gone by its reputation has continued to grow and it has come to be regarded as a modern classic. For the critic Joachim E. Brendt, My Goals Beyond is the 3record which really established solo guitar playing - the forerunner of hundreds of solo guitar records which followed - and, in my opinion, it is still the most beautiful of them all.2 Knit Classics is proud to make My Goals Beyond available once again. John Coltrane genre: Jazz
release date 1957-01-01 publisher: Blue Note Records
(写的太好,不得不转) JOHN COLTRANE,tenor saxophone LEE MORGAN,trumpet CURTIS FULLER,trombone KENNY DREW,piano PAUL CHAMBERS,bass PHILLY JOE JONES,drums
