Dave Brubeck genre: Jazz
release date 1961-01-01 publisher: Columbia
Time Further Out continues the Dave Brubeck Quartet's exploration of unusual time signatures that began on their 1959 album Time Out. The tracks are ordered by the number of beats per bar, starting with "It's a Raggy Waltz" and "Bluette" in 3/4; "Charles Matthew Hallelujah", a tribute to his newborn son, in 4/4; "Far More Blue" and "Far More Drums" in 5/4; "Maori Blues" in 6/4; "Unsquare Dance" in 7/4; "Bru's Boogie Woogie" in 8/8; and concluding with "Blue Shadows in the Street" in 9/8. The time signatures are listed on the album's cover, where they are referred to as "tempos". Like Time Out, Time Further Out's cover features a work of modern art: a painting by Catalan-Spanish artist Joan Miró.

Miles Davis genre: Jazz
release date 1970-01-01 publisher: Sony
Bitches Brew is a studio double album by jazz musician Miles Davis, released in June of 1970 on Columbia Records.[1] Recording sessions took place at Columbia's 30th Street Studio over the course of three days in August of 1969. The album continued Davis' experimentation of electric instruments previously featured on his critically acclaimed In a Silent Way album. With the use of these instruments, such as the electric piano and guitar, Davis rejected traditional jazz rhythms in favor of a looser, rock-influenced improvisational style. Often cited as one of Davis' best-selling albums and masterpieces, Bitches Brew marked a turning point in modern jazz. Upon release, it received mixed criticism from fans and critics, alike, due to the album's unconventional style and revolutionary sound. Later on, Bitches Brew gained recognition as one of jazz's greatest albums and a progenitor of the jazz rock genre, as well as a major influence on rock and funk musicians.[2] In 1998, Columbia Records released The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions, a four-disc box set that included the original album as well as ensuing studio sessions through February 1970.

Dave Brubeck
release date 1992-12-15 publisher: Sony
With material from 1946 to 1991, this handsome box set reveals the enormous breadth of Brubeck's interests, accomplishments, and collaborations. There are tracks, for example, with Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Rushing, Gerry Mulligan, and Carmen McRae. There's even a duo with Charles Mingus. Also here is the full range of Brubeck's studied structures, involved harmonies, and elements unusual to jazz, including expansive time signatures and the use of fugue form and 12-tone theory. Included, of course, are such signature hits as "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and "Take Five." Brubeck came up playing hillbilly, swing, and Dixieland, and at college studied modern composition. All of that--and little constraint--informed his complex, idiosyncratic style. The package includes an 80-page booklet with his biography, rare photographs, and descriptions of every track. --Peter Monaghan

Moscow Art Trio / The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra
release date 2008-09-02 publisher: JARO Medien
Music for an imaginary ballet by pianist Misha Alperin, performed by the trio and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. The theme is a medieval rural wedding, inspired partly by the films of Sergei Paradjanov, and partly by Alperin's experience playing in Moldavian wedding bands. There's an oddly appropriate sense of Aaron Copland-ish prairie hoedown to some of the sections, and while reed-warbler Sergey Starostin's bird-calls remain an aquired taste, the strings are thrilling.
