In spite of the various crises that have occurred since 2017’s Native Invader, Tori Amos has emerged with Ocean to Ocean, her most personal work in years – an album bursting with warmth and connection, with deep roots in her earliest song writing. Written during the 3rd Lockdown in Cornwall this year, Ocean to Ocean is a universal story of going to rock bottom and renewing yourself all over again. For a record written within limited surroundings, two things are remarkable – its rich stylistic variation, from tango to wide-screen romance, and the big-heartedness of songs, which run almost like a series of love letters to family both present and absent. It is, in one sense, her most Cornish record yet: the artwork says it all, with Amos shot on the cliffs, and in the caves on the county’s south west shores.

Following nearly two years of global touring in support of their adventurous and acclaimed album, The Wilderness (2016), Explosions In The Sky paused on the future to reflect on the past. Celebrating their 20th year as a band with a pair of remastered reissues of early beloved classics – How Strange, Innocence (2000) and The Rescue (2005) – they embarked on a memorable series of anniversary concerts in 2019. It was around then that Explosions In The Sky was approached to craft the score to a new documentary about a place with which, as native Texans, they were very familiar: Big Bend National Park. That documentary, Big Bend: The Wild Frontier of Texas, premiered on PBS in the United States as well as on a variety of networks in other countries in early 2021. The hour-long film intimately follows the lives of native animals amid expansive aerial views of the iconic desert landscape that makes up one of the grandest natural wonders in the world. The band set these sights to an inspired, melodic, and meaningful blend of acoustic guitar, slide guitar, strings, piano, bells, and drums that feels as alive and diverse--and vast and lonely--as the place it depicts. Big Bend (An Original Soundtrack for Public Television) takes that mesmerizing score and recontextualizes it as a standalone album. Those brief cues have been expanded and transformed into a thoughtful, gorgeous full-length album that recalls some of the band’s most magical and memorable moments from their storied history. Big Bend: The Wild Frontier of Texas is a film that explores the past and present of the vast, complicated landscape that still holds countless mysteries yet to be uncovered. In Big Bend (An Original Soundtrack for Public Television), Explosions In The Sky pursue a similar approach to their own past and present, and find inspiration in all that has yet to be discovered.

I Could Live in Hope is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Low. It was released on December 2, 1994 on Vernon Yard Recordings.

Speaking about Lucid, Raveena says it "really digs into hard experiences. It recounts a lot more of my suffering. You can be soft and full of power and full of strength. You can go through things that tend to really harden people, but that doesn't take away from those beautiful, vulnerable, creative parts of yourself. Those can still be alive and growing." Raveena adds, "My expression through music has always been about healing."

I loved Guided by Voices, but I was not yet in love with them when I saw them on the tour supporting Alien Lanes. Two hours, some free beers from Bob himself, a wicked leg cramp, and, I dunno, fifty tunes I was only marginally familiar with at the time had me checking my watch. The mic twirls and leg kicks were fun for a novelty, but after so long... And then came "Watch Me Jumpstart". I experienced a moment of clarity regarding music unlike any before or any that would come after. Monumental chords shook the ground beneath me, and the significance of Robert Pollard's epic call to stand and be counted really hit me. The Who, The Beatles, and all GBV's other obvious touchstones differed from the people I was watching onstage in one critical respect: Those other bands were "rock stars"; Robert Pollard was just the most average guy in the world, blessed with the skills of a master songsmith and boundless imagination. He's no rock star, but he gets to play one every day of his life, and the large-hearted wonder he beams as a result of that opportunity is like nothing I've ever found in any other music. Alien Lanes was the band's first real chance to show this to the world at large; Bee Thousand came first, and gets all the attendant acclaim, but (to paraphrase), that is not to say that Alien Lanes is not the best they've ever been. --Eric Carr

Bags & Trane is an album credited to jazz musicians Milt Jackson and John Coltrane, released in 1961 on Atlantic Records, catalogue SD 1368. Taking its title from Jackson and Coltrane's nicknames, it is the only collaborative record by the two, although only Jackson contributed original compositions.

When you think of lyrical, romantic jazz piano playing, the first name that comes to mind, the one who influenced so many others, is Bill Evans. Miles Davis thought so much of him, he included him on the sessions for his immortal Kind Of Blue album. You Must Believe In Spring, a trio recording cut late in Evans' career, features gorgeous playing and stunning production. Xiu Xiu is an American experimental band, formed in 2002 by singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart in San Jose, California. Currently, the line-up consists of Stewart and Angela Seo. The band's name comes from the film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl and has influenced the sound of their music according to Stewart.

Merry Clayton (born December 25, 1948) is an American soul and gospel singer and an actress. She provided a number of backing vocal tracks for major performing artists in the 1960s, most notably in her duet with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones song "Gimme Shelter".
