Einstein on the Beach is hardcore Philip Glass with its frenzied (and repetitive) pace, nonsensical poems, and exhaustive length. While this opera helped propel his fame, I would not recommend diving into it if you are looking for an introduction to what Philip Glass writes. Personally, I discovered and grew to love this music through the compilation CD, Songs from the Trilogy. It is cheaper than any recording of these three operas and lets you hear the best of what they have to offer. Of the three, I think Einstein on the Beach is the most difficult to appreciate and even after purchasing, it sat on my shelf. Yet, over time, I begin to hear more than the "One, two, three" and violins sawing away: there's a delicate sound beneath it all. Akhnaten and Satyagraha have this quality as well, but it's easier to hear at first listening. So if you're a casual Philip Glass listener, be prepared to not like Einstein at first because it is so much different than his more recent releases. For die-hard Glass fans, this recording is the longer (and cheaper) of the two available. If you enjoy his Music in Twelve Parts and other earlier works, this opera is a real treat. Since Einstein is such a monumental piece in the Glass library, it's a must buy. But if you're looking for something less hardcore, try Songs from the Trilogy. I gave five stars because when compared to other music, it's still awe-inspiring, but when compared to other Philip Glass music, especially the other two operas, it rates three stars. \By Richard Morgan

Misterioso is a live album by American jazz ensemble the Thelonious Monk Quartet, released in 1958 by Riverside Records. Pianist and composer Thelonious Monk had overcome an extended period of career difficulties by the time of his 1957 residency at the Five Spot Café in New York City. He returned to the venue the following year for a second residency and recorded Misterioso on August 7, 1958, leading a quartet that featured drummer Roy Haynes, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin. Misterioso and its title track refer to Monk's reputation as an enigmatic, challenging musician. The album's cover art, which appropriates Giorgio de Chirico's 1915 painting The Seer, was part of Riverside's attempt to capitalize on Monk's popularity with listeners such as the intellectual and bohemian audiences at the Five Spot Café. The album features four of his earlier compositions, which Monk reworked live. It was one of the first successful live recordings of his music and was produced by Orrin Keepnews, who said that Monk played more distinctly than on his studio albums in response to the audience's enthusiasm. In contemporary reviews of Misterioso, music critics complimented Monk's performance but were critical of Griffin, whose playing they felt was out of place with the quartet. It was remastered and reissued in 1989 and 2012 by Original Jazz Classics. Since its initial reception, the album has received retrospective acclaim from critics, who viewed Griffin's playing as a highlight.

Producer Ted Templeman was a bit of a surprising choice given his firmly mainstream production credits, with The Doobie Brothers already under his belt and Van Halen lurking in the near future. As it turned out, such a combination led to a better-working fusion than might be expected, making one wonder why in the world Clear Spot wasn't more of a commercial success than it was. The sound is great throughout, and the feeling is of the coolest bar-band in town, not to mention one that could eat all the patrons for breakfast if it felt like it. Fans of the fully all-out side of Beefheart might find the end result not fully up to snuff as a result, but those less concerned with pushing back all borders all the time will enjoy his unexpected blend of everything tempered with a new accessibility. "Nowadays a Woman's Got to Hit a Man," besides having a brilliant title, shows the balance perfectly -- Van Vliet serves up his rough asides with all his expected wit and sass, while the Magic Band trade off notes here and there just so. At the same time, the track is strong blues-rock that doesn't pander, with a particularly fierce solo thanks to Zoot Horn Rollo. "My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains" is a great love song, the softer arrangement saved from being too off by Beefheart's delivery. Other winners include the title track, a sharp combination of an off-kilter arrangement for a straightforward melody, the great shaggy-dog story of "Golden Birdies," and "Big Eyed Beans from Venus," a fantastically strange piece of aggression. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

Grant Hart is an icon of American independent music. One third of the legendary trio Husker Du, and one half of its extraordinary songwriting duo, the band crawled out of the US punk undeground at the dawn of the 1980s and quickly proved themselves, with a succession of classic LPs on the SST label, as one of America's most exceptional and influential bands. Hart was also responsible for some of Husker Du's most fondly remembered songs, including the anthemic "Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely". After the last two albums on Warner, the group acrimoniously split and Hart began a more eclectic career, splitting time between solo albums, his group Nova Mob, poetry readings with friends William S. Burroughs and Patti Smith, and visual art. And that brings us to 2009 and his excellent new solo album, Hot Wax. Recorded in Montreal and Minneapolis, and featuring guests including members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor & A Silver Mt. Zion and produced by Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire), Hot Wax ably demonstrates Hart's incredible songwriting talent. He has created an organic rock album using classic tools to make modern art: Psychedelic soundscapes loaded with strong melodies, vintage instrumentation, 60s pop/bubblegum harmonies and a style that he admittedly owes in parts to his devotion for friend Patti Smith. In short: this is no mere pedestrian effort from a 'legend paying the rent'; it's a fresh, invigorating album in its own right. Any fan of Husker Du or Hart's solo albums (particularly 1989's Intolerance) will be won over by Hot Wax , and what's more, it will win him new fans. The Australian edition features a fantastic bonus track, 'Khalid' - recorded only last month and chosen by Hart to slot into the running order of our edition at track 5.
