In 1943, a 24-year-old maths student and a GPO engineer combined to hack into Hitler's personal super-code machine - not Enigma but an even tougher system, which he called his 'secrets writer'. Their break turned the Battle of Kursk, powered the D-day landings and orchestrated the end of the conflict in Europe. But it was also to be used during the Cold War - which meant both men's achievements were hushed up and never officially recognised.

現年八十七歲的聶華苓生於中國武漢，1949年與家人逃到台灣，後因編輯【自由中國】受白色恐怖牽連，之後赴美與丈夫 Paul Engle創辦影響力龐大的愛荷華大學「國際寫作計畫」。通過他們的「國際寫作計劃」，世界各地作家越過意識形態聚集一堂。1979年，大陸、台灣和香港的作家隔絕三十載，首次相見於愛荷華。
聶華苓曾自喻為「一棵樹，根在大陸，幹在臺灣，枝葉在愛荷華。」香港導演陳安琪花三年時間、往來兩岸三地與美國，拍攝紀錄片《三生三世聶華苓》。聶華苓的一生，恍如一段三生三世的飄泊旅行，交織出了當代海外傑出華人作家的清晰身影與美麗，也刻劃了她和詩人伴侶保羅．安格爾至死不渝的堅定情感。

打开国门没有多久的中国人开始用惊讶的目光窥探外面的天地。1985年，英国威猛乐队（Wham! ）1985年在北京工体和广州越秀山举行了两场演唱会，此片全程记录了威猛乐队抵华后的官方和民间的交流过程。中外双方似乎都对对方都一无所知，但求知、好奇和热情驱动着他们共同演绎这场奇异的旅程。除却现场演出部分，此片为难得一见的对20世纪80年代初中国影像文献，值得一看。
这被认为改变了大陆流行音乐史；并被认为是西方流行音乐首次获许在1949年后的中国大陆举行演出，虽然在1981年, 法国电子音乐家雅尔（Jean Michel Jarre）亦曾来华演出。
对于身处21世纪的观者，此片更重要的是展现了20世纪80年代中国北京广州两地的市井图像，人们从对政治和国家大生产建设的亢奋转为对物质和文化新潮的追求。
