My First Time in Springfield
Movie · Review
The Simpsons Movie (2007)I've never watched The Simpsons before. In fact, despite having always known about the property, my only prior experience with it was getting toys in my Burger King kid's meals back in the day, which my super conservative mother would quickly throw away because she didn't want me having anything to do with this "cartoon for grownups" as a wee lad. Oh, and a little bit of time spent playing a bit of the series' Crazy Taxi-esque car game at the house of one of my older sister's friends behind my parents back 🤫
What finally made me check out this long-running animated sitcom in its feature-length form here after years of what I guess you could call "programmed indifference," was someone who I've been following online for a few years now recently posting a review for the film's tie-in game. I've seen him review several different versions of it in the past, but this time I decided it was at last time to see for myself why Homer and his family have been television staples for so long and what earned them his fandom.
I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I didn't pick up on or fully get as this is technically my first proper introduction to the franchise, but I must say I think I understand why it was so beloved in its "glory days." It's a thoroughly amusing mix of classic Tom and Jerry slapstick, not overly obnoxious satire, and juuuust the right amount of adult humor to be a bit edgy without venturing out too far into the realm of unwholesomeness. I regularly laughed out loud and find to it to be more palatable for the masses content-wise than the likes of its contemporaries (South Park, Family Guy, ect.)
Is it enough for me to start catching up on the umpteen bajillion seasons of the show that I've missed? Not quite. I will be making an effort to try catching up on its video game adaptations if I come across any copies though. Shoutout to you Mike Arrani. Been a pleasure reading your content and looking forward to continuing to do so.
