Dracula's Daughter (1936)

Without even looking at the reviews, how much do you wanna bet most of them are calling this queer-coded? Lol Any movie about suppressed carnal desires is a movie about gays to those weirdos. Forget the fact that out of the two people she murders, one is a man, and that her "real" nature is shown as evil. Her refusal to be honest and combat this influence from beyond the grave is the reason for her downfall. This is much more obviously a metaphor for a failed female liberation. A major part of the premise is the influence from beyond the grave, i.e. from a powerful authoritative male figure. Her eventual failure is the failure of self-realization. Of being her own person, not an extension of a man. She was advised that the strength is within her, but she puts her entire struggle upon the shoulders of another man instead. In the end, when unable to attain liberation, she embraces the role that had been imposed upon her. But, oh surprise, it's again a power-seeking man that stands in her way. This is truly one for my male feminist canon.
