Megalopolis (2024)Oh, what a surprise, one of the most thematically-rich and imaginative movies of recent years was rejected by the moronic crowds. The irony is almost too delicious. The movie is a direct commentary on modern culture and socio-political climate with its decadent, hedonistic, incestual manufactured conformity and witch-hunts targeting true originality. It's about an artist who dares to dream and a society that not only refuses to, but is almost self-destructively resistant. A society that is stuck in its hauntologies and is dying a slow and painful death. Megalopolis is more than just a commentary though. It's a modern myth. It operates in symbolism and archetypes, building a philosophical framework to be passed onto new generations of viewers. It's a shame most current generations would rather watch dumbass Marvel movies. There are two kinds of people:
- those who hate what they don't understand
- those who are fascinated by it. There used to be a time when the second category outnumbered the first. It's the opposite now. Perhaps it's end times for our civilization. The comparison to the Roman Empire is very apt, but I think the movie ends way more optimistically than the real life will. Perhaps, if Coppola could see the response to the movie, he would've ended it differently.
