This eve we biked in to Monterey. It was a gray day but there was sun in our💖 thanks to one of the joys of biking: the ease of pausing to chat with folks!

We talked with pedestrians, including: a dad on Webster with 2 young kids he takes biking—he’d just exited vehicle, cautiously & was interested in Dutch Reach; a man outside PO who was picking up his 9yo son from drum lessons nearby; a young woman at library curbside, who has never learned to bike (we welcomed her to call us); a family from Los Angeles on Alvarado with a teen, looking for ice cream; a fam from Fresno with 1yo & 7yo, about to check in to Portola; a fam from Modesto with 1, 7 & almost 11 yo—we sang him a birthday song—by Wedo’s Taco Truck; and 4 young women knitting—1 jelly our daughter is at a Lucy Dacus concert in NY tonight.

Also met a young driver from Pacific Grove, alongside us at Casa Verde & Del Monte light, who welcomed tips on bike-friendly driving.

None of these sweet interactions would’ve happened if we’d driven.💚

The bicycle education program at the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center was founded by Bicycling Monterey in April 2012 and still rolls on in April 2025!

The bike tech class series—providing bicycle repair and maintenance instruction—is only possible because of two volunteers who stepped up in 2012 and still continue volunteering on this 13th anniversary: Frank Henderson and Luciano Rodriguez.

Details: https://bikemonterey.org/probation-dept-youth-center-bike-education.html

@arestelle asks, about an experience they had the other day:

A man w/two little kids, all on bikes at a corner near the library. As I turned in on my e-bike, he yelled "Get a real bike!" I have a sneaking suspicion he does not run all his trips & errands on that mtn bike. Teaching his kids to be ignorant & judgy. 😑

Q4. How do people respond to jeers like this, especially when they're said in front of impressionable kids?

I have to go to campus tomorrow on my ‘research day’ so I am rebelling by riding in a bit later than normal. Going to be wet so full mudguards and flaps.

I am actually doing some research at the moment and have nearly finished my bit of work on a manuscript for Psychology of Music. Might get an hour at my desk before the workshop I’ve been asked to attend. Of course I could travel by train and I’d have more time on it, but that would be far too simple. I don’t do simple. And that has kept me sane for nearly 30 years at this wild University.

May is Bike Month, and Bicycling Monterey’s anniversary month—the 16th in 2025. We are grateful to the people listed in: https://bikemonterey.org/16th-anniversary-bicycling-monterey-alpha-list-of-donors.html.

Is your name on that list? If not, consider supporting this grassroots volunteer effort as one of your #BikeMonth actions: https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations/donors. Thank you!

What are your favorite books on repairing things? What about books on making things?

As the internet gets filled with AI slop I've been putting together a personal library for friends and neighbors.

I have a book on bike repair, two books related to making, altering, and mending clothes, a book on home repairs, a book about electronics, and the book I used to study for my Ham radio exam.

Hmm, all the sellers of e-bike batteries online (LiFePO4 or Li-ion) are no-name mystery Chinese brands. Are the LiFePO4 actually LiFePO4, or are they Li-ion? Will they explode while charging? Not having any kind of safety standard attached to e-bike batteries and their manufacturing really seems to be unfortunate. (even saw a YouTube video showing the crappy construction of a Bosch battery.. .so even the high end stuff not great). #BikeTooter

https://kion546.com/news/2025/05/13/new-concerns-comes-as-bike-safety-becomes-an-issue-in-salinas/ Reminder to people who bike on sidewalks in the Monterey County seat and its largest city, Salinas. Sidewalk riding is generally allowed in Salinas, except where signs give notice it is prohibited. But it must be done with due caution and reasonable speed, and the person biking must yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal before overtaking and passing. Learn more in our 90-second audio and related post, "BIKING ON SIDEWALKS, plus examples of ordinances from Monterey County, California” https://bikemonterey.org/biking-on-sidewalks-plus-examples-of-ordinances-from-monterey-county-california.html — also available in Spanish, "ANDAR EN BICICLETA EN LAS ACERAS además de ejemplos de ordenanzas del Condado de Monterey, California”: https://bikemonterey.org/andar-en-bicicleta-en-las-aceras-ademas-de-ejemplos-de-ordenanzas-del-condado-de-monterey-california.html.

@mastobikes_de
Hallo zusammen! September 2025 in Kirchzarten stattfinden.
Besteht Interesse? Gerne auch Ergänzungen, Anregungen, ... #mountainbike

Been quiet for a few days, because I've been busy cycling up Pack Monadnock for 4th of July weekend.

Three days, 3x climb up summit, 260 miles, 20,000 feet elevation gain.

If you're interested in how miserable it could be, how hard the climb is, and how I managed to pull it off, here's the first part (out of three):

Might not look like much, but when you’re trying to avoid a punctured bicycle tire by striving to dodge sharp debris on a road—while also trying to avoid being hit by a motor vehicle—it’s a lot!

We reported this—and other debris— directly to #Caltrans / California Department of Transportation, District 5 office. It’s still there today, as is other sharp debris we reported at same time. If you bike CA SR 68 / Highway 68, or other California highways, please submit a report to Caltrans when you come upon such road hazards. https://csr.dot.ca.gov/
