Z Zachodu prezydent Stanów Zjednoczonych Donald Trump grozi wprowadzeniem ceł odwetowych, jeśli Europa będzie egzekwować własne przepisy. Uznaje on opodatkowanie amerykańskich gigantów technologicznych na równi z europejskimi firmami, prawa użytkowników zapisane w ustawie o usługach cyfrowych oraz sankcje konkurencyjne wynikające z ustawy o rynkach cyfrowych za dyskryminację amerykańskich przedsiębiorstw – zasadniczo domagając się od Europy wyrzeczenia się własnych demokratycznych zasad w sferze cyfrowej. Suwerenność Europy stoi pod znakiem zapytania. Dopóki 80 procent europejskich produktów i usług cyfrowych pochodzi ze Stanów Zjednoczonych, szantaż będzie się rozwijał.

Europa potrzebuje teraz niezależnej europejskiej infrastruktury – zwłaszcza rodzimych sieci społecznościowych, które zapewniają równe warunki dostępu do informacji, chronią wolność mediów i gwarantują prawdziwą wolność słowa, w tym prawo do dostępu do faktów, a nie kłamstw i propagandy. Niedawna umowa dotycząca TikToka w Stanach Zjednoczonych, gdzie Trump bawi się pomysłem przekształcenia platformy w narzędzie propagandy MAGA wraz z przyjaznymi inwestorami, powinna wywołać dreszcze w Europie. Zbyt dobrze znamy strategię Orbána. Amerykańskie platformy wzmacniają rosyjską dezinformację i zagłuszają debatę polityczną. Rumunia powtórzyła wybory prezydenckie po tym, jak jej służby specjalne odkryły, że tysiące influencerów otrzymało wynagrodzenie za promowanie nieznanego kandydata. Nawet w okresie poprzedzającym powtórzenie odwołanych wyborów organizacja Global Witness odkryła, że algorytm TikToka dostarczał nowo zarejestrowanym, politycznie zrównoważonym użytkownikom prawie trzy razy więcej treści skrajnie prawicowych"

Will Mastodon, the platform that keeps the #Fediverse alive, miss a strategic opportunity to bring official institutions on board at scale?

By watching how #EuroSky is being marketed compared to #Mastodon, it certainly seems that way.

I wish the folks at Mastodon would invest in more professional marketing, similar to what we're seeing from its rival, Bluesky.

There was a major meeting in the EU Parliament focused on this topic, yet there was no announcement or microblog post from Mastodon. Zero engagement.

After the nice presentations of @haubles and @andypiper, I've asked them, "How can a grassroots movement like the Fediverse compete with social networks like BlueSky that have the resources to travel to Brussels every other week?"

I also mentioned the @leavex campaign, which makes it easier for us to contact politicians and ask them to leave X and possibly join us. And how some politicians are already asking to remove their names from the group of politicians still on X.

I'm glad I could meet @_elena again and discuss these issues.
