finished watching Good Boy
I'm not enthusiastic about the horror plot, and the dog's perspective could have been used in more interesting ways, but the bond between a dog and his human? I don't think I've seen it represented anywhere better than here.

I agree with The Flick Philosopher's take on that part: https://www.flickfilosopher.com/2025/09/good-boy-movie-review-horrors-beyond-canine-comprehension.html

finished watching Lars and the Real Girl 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
Finally got around to watching this one. So awkward! Had me sweating like I was running a marathon. Also cute and humane. Gosling is fantastic here. Near-perfect movie, in my book, except that I found it difficult to believe that any town—even one in Canada—could be filled with so many people who would be so patient and understanding. But that's the cynic in me, and that fucker can sit down and shut up for one sweet movie.

I have a new app out! It's called Star-Studded and it's a native Windows client for The Movie Database. You can search for movies, tv shows, and people; and log into your account to do all that, plus see your lists and add stuff to them.

It's free on the Microsoft Store. Windows 10 2004 (19041) and up.

2017 Film Poll - Semi-Final Round

#LetterboxdFriday

THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE
Beautiful black and white cinematography with lots of shadows and an acting masterclass from Billy Bob Thornton.

THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER
A good enough adaptation from a masterpiece of a novel. Alan Arkin’s performance is so good, and Sondra Locke in this film reminds me of young Tilda Swinton. Cold-war-era Hollywood stripped out the politics and queerness of the book.

And, a few Lynch shorts while reading his biography, “Room to Dream”.

finished watching Highway to Hell
A road movie set in the late-80s Hell. The aesthetics makes it worth a watch.

#movies

finished watching Aliens
I set my sense of the colour blue to the cinematography of this movie. It had that great of an aesthetic influence on me during my early childhood, I guess, but anyway, that's how I calibrate my brain now. The problem is that the first Blu-ray made everything green and killed the pinks, I've tried to adapt but it's a different movie, and the AI remaster... well, just fuck you, Jim, I couldn't even finish it.

So here I am, having to watch my painfully low-res DVD to remember how colour is done. Is it worth it? YES. Will I eventually regrade the Blu-ray myself? Probably. Am I right in the head? Who knows.
