A fancy hummingbird with a turquoise and neon green throat, a purple cap with a slight crest, and a long, long tail with four ribbons-- two straight central ribbons & two gracefully curved outer ribbons that end in broad leaflike discs-- sits proud & puffed on a bare vine. This is the adult male Marvelous Spatuletail. Photo by Peachfront. Nov. 13, 2024.

Moray: Inca Innovation in the Andes
Moray, in Peru’s Sacred Valley, features circular terraces believed to be an ancient agricultural lab. The Incas used these to simulate different climates and grow crops at varying altitudes centuries ahead of their time.
A perfect blend of science, nature, and wisdom.

A finger cajon nearing completion, my latest mini-project.

The standard cajon is a fairly large box-shaped instrument originated by African slaves in Peru who were denied traditional drums & resorted to shipping crates to get rhythmic. One sits on top and slaps, taps, etc. – most have snare drum wire mounted within for added sonic brightness & texture.

Handmade from 1/4" pine, bamboo mini-skewers & wood glue.

A magnifying glass, green arc welding goggles, craft knife, scissors, etc., surround a small wooden box / mini-cajon slightly longer and narrower than a tall man's hand adorned with taped-on paper stencil letters for some text to be applied via sunlight. The soundboard has already been done, a somewhat jumbled dual-column tower of letters spelling out the word MONSTER.

Advance of the far right threatens the Amazon

"The far right is moving in on the Amazon. Outsider and attorney Abelardo de la Espriella's win in Colombia, Keiko Fujimori's triumph in Peru, and the state of emergency in Bolivia point to an increasingly hostile future for the planet's largest rainforest.

Added to this scenario is the alarming fact that Venezuela is a ward of the United States.

If Flávio Bolsonaro comes out on top in Brazil’s October elections, nearly the entire Amazon will be held hostage to a project based on the limitless exploration of Nature, along with most of the countries in Latin America."

Peru’s Keiko Fujimori, Colombia’s Abelardo de la Espriella, and Bolivia’s Rodrigo Paz are threats to the Amazon.

Ancascocha Trek 4 Days to Machu Picchu

The Ancascocha Trek 4 Days is Peru’s off-the-beaten-path alternative to the Classic Inca Trail, crossing remote Andean valleys where llamas and alpacas graze freely below snow-capped peaks.
