Tolteekse beeldhouwwerken in Tula, Mexico, Ed van der Elsken, 1960

![The image depicts a series of stone sculptures known as "tuffheads" or "tufa heads," which are part of the Toltec heritage in Mexico. These figures were created by the Toltec civilization, which flourished between approximately 900 and 1200 AD along what is now the border area that divides Mexico from Guatemala.
The sculptures have a solemn expression with prominent features such as elongated noses, deep-set eyes, wide foreheads, and tall hats or headgear. They are carved in an angular style reminiscent of Maya art but were created by Toltec artisans who incorporated their unique artistic traditions into these works.
This particular photograph is credited to Ed van der Elsken from his collection titled "Tolteekse beeldhouwwerken in Tula, Mexico." The image captures the stark contrast between the dark figures and the lighter sky behind them. Van der Elsken's work often explored themes of travel, culture, and architecture across different regions.
The black-and-white nature of the photograph emphasizes texture and form over color, which can be particularly effective for highlighting details in such sculptures. The setting appears to be an open field or desert-like environment, suggesting that these figures may have been part of a larger ceremonial site where they played significant roles within Toltec religious practices and societal rituals.
