Caught a picture of this #fish at the point in #Pittsburgh. Can anyone identify?? Also there’s tons of smaller fish to the bottom of the picture zipping around. They were maybe 3 inches long. #fishing #boat #river

Yarra River Trail, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

A photograph shot at a distance across a gently rippled river. On the other side of the river on the stone-brick river bank is an asphalt trail with three bicycle riders evenly spaced riding towards the right, with a younger rider leading at the front on the right. Cutting diagonally from the centre left to the middle-upper right is another asphalt trail which joins on (at the lower left), and there is a pedestrian walking down this trail. The pedestrian is positioned in the photograph between the centre and right-most cyclist, and the pedestrian's feet are at about the chest-level of the riders. The rest of the land is evenly-coloured green grass. There is a sign to the left of the left-most cyclist that says "CAPITAL HILL TRAIL." At the top of the grassed area is a road, with poles and parked cars. There is another trail at the road level with some more pedestrians on the left of the frame. In the background are trees with muted-colour leaves and a gentle dirt hillside.

Some days, you just don't want to be busy. Efficient. Pro-active. Intentional. Purpose driven. Or driven in any fashion.

The Captain

From this point of view as can be seen here, El Capitan stands in all its glory rising 3,000 feet above the valley floor. The gray granite seems to dominate the valley floor and from this perspective it does. But the river that cuts through the valley will lead you to many other places that try to also compete.

The Captain

You’re standing at the edge of Yosemite Valley, gazing upward at El Capitan, a colossal granite monolith that dominates the landscape like a stone cathedral. Its sheer vertical face rises with breathtaking force—smooth in places, jagged in others—etched with subtle striations from centuries of wind, ice, and sun. The rock glows faintly under a soft, overcast sky, its pale gray surface kissed by diffused light that makes the cliff feel both immense and ethereal.

Below, the Merced River gently winds through the valley, its surface rippling with motion and reflecting the muted tones of the sky. The water’s quiet murmur contrasts with the silent grandeur of the cliff above. On either side of the river, lush green trees—a mix of pine and deciduous—frame the scene with vibrant life. Their leaves rustle faintly, adding texture and movement to the stillness.

The air feels cool and clean, tinged with the scent of damp earth and pine needles. There’s a sense of reverence here, as if nature itself is holding its breath in the presence of something sacred. The image evokes awe, solitude, and timelessness—a moment suspended between stone and sky.

Winter in the Valley

Stoneman Bridge in Yosemite Valley is a popular spot for photographers and painters alike. Looking up to the Northeast the Merced River flows down from Happy Isle and crosses in Front of Half Dome. To the south you can follow the river down along the eastern walls of the valley.

Winter In The Valley

A quiet winter hush settles over Yosemite Valley in this scene. Fresh snow softens every surface, turning the landscape into a world of muted whites and silvers. The Merced River moves slowly through the frame, its dark, glassy surface reflecting the pale sky like a strip of polished obsidian. Along the riverbank, snow-laden pines lean inward, their branches heavy and still, absorbing sound the way thick velvet absorbs light.

Half Dome rises like a ghost emerging from thinning clouds—its granite face catching a faint wash of afternoon sun that glows warm against the cold surroundings. The air feels crisp enough to sting the lungs, carrying the faint scent of wet stone and pine bark exposed beneath the snow.

The entire valley seems to exhale slowly, as if pausing between storms. Light drifts across the scene in soft, shifting patches, illuminating the western bank where the sun briefly kisses the fresh snowfall, making it sparkle as though dusted with crushed crystal. It’s a moment of stillness, clarity, and quiet awe—winter holding Yosemite in a gentle, luminous grip.

Photograph of a river almost entirely covered by a thick layer of opaque white ice forming stalactites on its edges, and on top of that by a layer of snow, with a fast current and rapids still visible in the center of the riverbed. Dark forest lines both banks and contrasts with the very white, bluish snow. The photo is taken from above, from a bridge over the river.

The river is brown from tannins but it’s clear and sparkly right now. There’s a 4ft space I call the beach near us. It’s good to visit because you can get close to the water, but still check for gators #photography #river #nature #afternoonlight

I painted this watercolor painting some years ago on location in Bavaria, Germany. Every time I look at it, it brings back fond memories of a wonderful day on vacation.
