#Today 23

Good day!

At last, autumn has arrived, but not just any autumn.

Be safe out there.

I wish it was different. I wish none of this was happening. I wish a lot of things.

Wishing doesn’t accomplish anything. It never has. Autumn is here and it’s almost time to vote.

Be everwell.

A view through a pine forest where the undergrowth is a muted yellow to contrast with the green trees and brown bark. The sky is gray.

“Early Light, Mono Craters” — First morning sunlight on the slopes of Mono Craters.

Mono Basin is a fine place to contemplate geology and immense spans of time. Mono Lake itself is an ancient body of water, and one that has not always looked like it does today. The lake is probably 3/4 of a million years old, and its ancestor lake was, at times, much deeper and larger than it is today. At times its waters rose high enough to overcome its current landlocked state and drain either north or south. (To really bend your mind, its waters may have drained to ancient Lake Manly in Death Valley.) Today, as large as the lake is, it is greatly diminished in size and depth by comparison.

Surfing Before School...

This is a black and white water sports photo in landscape format of a female teen surfing shortly after sunrise. Hermosa Beach, California (2013).

All of the right side of the image, extending from the centre of the base of the photo, diagonally upwards to the upper left corner: is brimming with a maelstrom of foaming brilliant white surf from a Pacific wave breaking from right to left. The remains of the image, to the left, is filled with jet black sea water with horizontal ripples disturbing the surface. In the centre of the picture is our female teen. She is viewed from a few metres above, three metres away and with her filling half the height of the photo. She is standing on her surfboard, body facing the camera, her head angled back as she looks at the breaking wave behind her, perhaps with an anxious expression on her face. She has long, dark and wet hair, is wearing a dark t-shirt with the word 'Redondo' in large white lettering and a black wetsuit underneath. She is surfing from right to left and slightly towards the camera.

Sarracenia rubra has been putting out some decent pitchers in the latter part of the summer. This is subspecies wherryi, named after botanist Edgar T. Wherry, who did a lot of work on various species of Sarracenia. Native to restricted parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, it is also known as Wherry's sweet pitcher plant.

A cluster of pitcher plants, Sarracenia rubra. The pitchers display a striking gradient of colors, transitioning from bright green at the base to warm shades of yellow, orange, and deep red near the top. Each tube is topped with a hood-like lid that helps prevent rainwater from diluting the digestive fluids inside.

This image features a close-up of a large, white hibiscus flower. The petals are slightly textured with delicate veins, surrounding a deep magenta center. A prominent, pale yellow stamen extends from the middle of the flower, which is softly illuminated by natural sunlight.
