Formerly part of Clarence Barracks, an 18th century fortified area providing victualling duties to the Royal Navy, the last remaining part of the structure from its rebuild in 1890 and bomb damage in World War II is these days Portsmouth City Museum.

We're looking at the face of an impressive red brick building across an open space of concrete paths and very dry-looking grass dotted with picnic benches. It's a hot and sunny day although there's a fair bit of white cloud in the deep blue sky. The red brick building is symmetrical, broadly over three storeys in height, but at each end and in the centre, either side of a central, taller section, there are circular towers topped with steep, conical, tiled turrets. Windows line the floors, well spaced-out, sashed, narrow and tall. The central section of the structure has a doorway on the ground floor flanked by pillars which support an angled, bay window area above over two storeys. Within an arched recess above that, in line with the roof area either side of the central towers, there are small windows, and set back from there, rising towards the rear of the building, there is a taller section, higher than the towers although appearing slightly lower from our position this far back and looking up.

“Early Light, Mono Craters” — First morning sunlight on the slopes of Mono Craters.

Mono Basin is a fine place to contemplate geology and immense spans of time. Mono Lake itself is an ancient body of water, and one that has not always looked like it does today. The lake is probably 3/4 of a million years old, and its ancestor lake was, at times, much deeper and larger than it is today. At times its waters rose high enough to overcome its current landlocked state and drain either north or south. (To really bend your mind, its waters may have drained to ancient Lake Manly in Death Valley.) Today, as large as the lake is, it is greatly diminished in size and depth by comparison.

She is standing on her surfboard, body facing the camera, her head angled back as she looks at the breaking wave behind her, perhaps with an anxious expression on her face. She has long, dark and wet hair, is wearing a dark t-shirt with the word 'Redondo' in large white lettering and a black wetsuit underneath. She is surfing from right to left and slightly towards the camera.
