这部动画为上海嘉定800年重点项目之一的“中国唱诗班”系列动画第二集，整个系列由青年导演林旭坚任监制，璀璨星空动画制作，新片场发行。短片以王维的同名诗为传作背景，讲述了嘉定名士王初桐和发小六娘青梅竹马、红豆定情却无缘厮守的爱情故事。
参与制作的还有动画导演彭擎政，作曲家易凤林先生。青年历 史学家李夏恩参与了本片的历史考证和编剧工作，配乐部分则由团队新晋成员韦卓成在美国创作完成。
故事以寄寓相思情的“红豆”为线索，牵出了出生名门贵族的六娘和寒门学子初桐从小情投意合却无法厮守的故事。作为一部以古典文学作品为基础的纯手绘动画，短片在画面意境上也具有中国特色。用色清淡雅致，与故事背景相得益彰。辅以细腻的人物刻画和贴合的音乐，美好却注定悲剧的爱情也增添了一份余韵颇长的古典气息。
“中国唱诗班”系列动画第一集《元日》已于2016年元旦推出。《相思》（下）、《饮湖上初晴后雨》、《游子吟》、《夜思》也已开始进行创作。
