Brenda Lee's career began at the tender age of just 5 singing her heart out in church with the Master Worker's Quartet in Georgia. One of the biggest pop stars of the early '60s and while she made few recordings of note after the mid-60's, the best of her first decade is fine indeed, encompassing not just the pop ballads that were her biggest hits, but straight country and some surprisingly fierce rockability. Nearly 50 years later and over 100 million albums sold, Brenda's work is distinctively recognized all over the world.

Various Positions is the seventh studio album by Leonard Cohen, released in December 1984 (and February 1985). It marked not only his turn to the modern sound and use of synthesizers (particularly on the opening track), but also, after his work on harmonies and backing vocals on the previous Recent Songs (1979), an even greater contribution from Jennifer Warnes, who is credited equally to Cohen as vocalist on all of the tracks.

Jeff Buckley was many things, but humble wasn't one of them. Grace is an audacious debut album, filled with sweeping choruses, bombastic arrangements, searching lyrics, and above all, the richly textured voice of Buckley himself, which resembled a cross between Robert Plant, Van Morrison, and his father Tim. Tyrone Wells has delivered an epic pop/rock album with his new release Remain. Having written/recorded half of the album in London and adding a more lush production to his singer-songwriter roots, the new album proves to be a great showcase for his powerful and emotional voice. Remain also features several collaborations, including producer Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall, James Morrison), Iain Archer (UK indie artist and Snow Patrol co-writer), Tim Myers (formerly of OneRepublic) and Matt Scannell (Vertical Horizon).



Wells has found himself on a new musical path on his second Universal Republic effort, but he continues to display the same gritty determination and work ethic that has enabled him to chart his own course from the very beginning. Wells launched his career unveiling his first indie release with the take-me-as-I-am motif of 2003's Snapshot. An in-demand live offering followed in 2005: Close: Live at McClain's, (the coffeehouse where he established his raved-about live rep) capturing the singer's unique intimacy with an audience.

Since 2004, J. Tillman has quietly been releasing records that have been, for the most part, unheard--some were of limited quantity, some were mostly available in Europe. The borderline-alienating starkness and welllived- in narratives of his first two records, I Will Return and Long May You Run, J. Tillman (released in limited runs of 150) endeared him to fans and drew comparisons to Nick Drake, Will Oldham, and Jason Molina. In 2006, after three months in Europe touring on his third and most accessible album Minor Works, Tillman recorded his fourth collection of songs at home with his brother and roommate. Cancer and Delirium struck a perfect balance between the intimacies of his earlier releases and the nuanced, melodic sense of Minor Works. Each song was imbued with the same strikingly disconsolate singing and devastatingly poignant prose that Tillman is known for, and was accented with some of his most gorgeous, spare arrangements. Vacilando Territory Blues, Tillman's fifth album and first with Austin's Western Vinyl, came as the result of three different recording attempts in 2008. The push and pull of this record veers sharply from the tone of Tillman's previous releases, which for the most part adhere to a singular mood and stylistic execution. Sacrificing a stylized album, the breadth of Tillman's abilities as a songwriter emerge in an array of musical personalities bound by his lyrical existential dread and economical arrangements. In 2008, Tillman joined Fleet Foxes, a Seattle band of longtime friends and musical collaborators. Casey Wescott and Christian Wargo both appear on VTB, along with several regular contributors who were willing to adapt to idiosyncratic recording obstructions. Vacilando Territory Blues is far and away Tillman's most collaborative effort, and the most striking moments here are those seemingly stumbled upon, without resorting to second-takes or microphone re-adjustment. This album casts a strange perspective on what people have come to expect from Tillman's music, but these songs, though oddly untethered, reveal the process of someone coming to terms with the prospect of making music in the void.
