居伊·德波四十年前的这本书现在读起来仍然觉得它直指现实，尽管不止他一个人这么做了。
“景观”（Spectacle）这个概念是居伊·德波炮制的一个大筐子，里面装着这个世界上所有的东西。有人说它过于空泛不无道理。日常生活中，我们在把杂什装进筐子前免不了整理一番，以便装得更多，这种情况也出现在德波那里。他并非囫囵吞枣地把一切都往里面塞，而是先做了一定的梳理工作。换言之，他找到了一个属于自己的审视角度。
当今社会的景观化倾向在人类进入二十一世纪后不仅没有减弱的趋势，反而愈演愈烈。并且随着商业化的深入，中国社会的景观化也变得越来越直观，也就是越来越肉眼可见。比如铺天盖地的商业宣传，以影像形式广泛传播，而它们正是割裂表象与本质的手段。表面上看大众似乎获得了更多的有用信息，事实上却是反映事物本质的信息无法传达给受众。景观完全是个幌子，它处心积虑地揣摩着人们的心思，获得人们的认同，诱骗并奴役着大众。之所以说奴役，是因为甘于停留于表象而无意探究本质的人在今天显然要比以往要多。不相信，看看电视里黄金时段放的都是啥节目就清楚了。
无论是集中的景观（Concentrated Spectacle）、弥散的景观（Diffuse Spectacle），还是综合的景观（Integrated Spectacle），都是社会中的统治手段。景观的不同并不等于景观和人的关系不同，其实所有景观的目的都是异化社会，统治人类。景观为谎言提供了更具迷惑性的传播手段，满足了特定人群在特定局部的需要。而事实上，所有人都会在某些局部有这样的需要，如此一来靠自律去阻止景观的入侵就变得难以实现。
比较乐观的看法出现在其他理论家的著作中，德波则是强调批评，而且用的是格言警句式的文风。1968年，德波的某些话语成为街头标语，同样不可避免地被景观化或说被异化。
《景观社会》篇幅不长，总共二百多自然段，但基本没有让人能轻松阅读的段落。看不懂也用不着羞愧，能通读一遍就不错了。书中还有相当篇幅是他人对居伊·德波的评介，明显比德波本人的理论好懂，还可让读者了解他和情境主义国际的全貌。
但不知道德波如何看待这些评价，因为他早就自杀了。
