This is a black and white photo in landscape format of the arched doorway into the former San Francisco Chinese Hospital with the remainder of the building demolished around it. Chinatown, San Francisco (2013).

Centred in the photo are the remains of the masonry entrance consisting on the outside of a few metres of vertical white brickwork but only a few bricks wide. Inside of the bricks are a pair of square white pillars with two ornate columns on the front. Within, is the wide arched entrance, perhaps a little less than two metres wide. On top of the archway is a horizontal masonry lintel with 'Chinese Hospital' on the left side, 东华医院 in the centre and 'Erected AD 1924' on the right side. On top is a tangle of bent metal and broken masonry. Visible through the archway is the demolition site of the former hospital with a large pile of rubble and steelwork to the right side. Again, visible through the arch and in the distance is the brick wall of an older urban building with numerous dark rectangular windows. To the right and above the arch are some city high-rise apartment buildings. Above is a clear and cloudless sky, rendered a milky white.

That rich, honeyed light of Scotland in autumn 🍂 ; in a land of constantly shifting light quality, the tones of this season are my favourite. The camera never quite does it justice.
