Port of Gdynia, Poland
Part 2 of 2: Development

Gdynia quickly gained importance, becoming not only a port but also one of the most dynamically developing cities in Poland. By 1938, its population had increased from approximately 1,300 to 120,000, reflecting intensive urbanization and infrastructure development. The city acquired modernist architecture and a unique urban layout designed by Stanisław Filipkowski. The port expanded, taking on military, commercial, and fishing functions, playing a key role in the development of Polish exports and enhancing the country’s defense capabilities. It was a symbol of Polish sovereignty and independence, an important “window to the world” for the young state.

Gdynia’s development was brutally interrupted by World War II, but after its end, the city was quickly rebuilt and continues to play a key role in Poland’s maritime economy. Today, Gdynia is a testament to the determination and vision of the Second Polish Republic, combining history with modernity on the Baltic Sea.
