False symmetry

#fensterfreitag #windowfriday #snow #quebec #photography

Photograph of two very simple windows side by side, just rectangular frames in a wall. Window on the left shows a focused image of green trees with snow falling but the frame and handles inside are blurred. Window on the right has the same view but blurred, with the frame and handles inside in focus. The eyes are going from left to right expecting to see the same thing but are deceived.

pines and lines

#forest #trees #quebec #photography

Photograph of the forest at the edge of a road (not visible), showing red pines with long, straight, pale gray trunks, their middle branches pruned for the installation of power lines. Five power lines cross the top of the image, in front of the trees. Behind them, the higher branches of the pines have dark green needles, with the white sky visible through them. Below the power lines, the forest is denser, with lower branches bearing long green needles, small green spruce trees, and red-twigged red-osier dogwoods growing among the larger trees.

“A monochrome winter landscape featuring a snowy field with visible footprints leading across the snow. Sparse vegetation and trees are present in the background, with a misty atmosphere fading into the horizon.”

Those words are automatically generated but they will do for this one.

Beaver paradise

The previous three years, this area was flooded and the dams were not maintained. For the first time this year we were able to walk dry on the original trail. We didn't see or hear the builders though.

I'm standing on top of the lowest dam to take this photo, looking higher towards the second dam and higher pond. We discovered a third and fourth smaller dams upstream. It was a little paradise, with perfectly controlled flows and the sound of small waterfalls from one pond to another... Very impressive!

Lanaudière, October 2026.
