7 is our 7th full-length record. At its release, we will have been a band for over 13 years. We have now written and released a total of 77 songs together. Last year, we released an album of b-sides and rarities. It felt like a good step for us. It helped us clean the creative closet, put the past to bed, and start anew. Throughout the process of recording 7, our goal was rebirth and rejuvenation. We wanted to rethink old methods and shed some self-imposed limitations. In the past, we often limited our writing to parts that we could perform live. On 7, we decided to follow whatever came naturally. As a result, there are some songs with no guitar, and some without keyboard. There are songs with layers and production that we could never recreate live, and that is exciting to us. Basically, we let our creative moods, instead of instrumentation, dictate the album’s feel. In the past, the economics of recording have dictated that we write for a year, go to the studio, and record the entire record as quickly as possible. We have always hated this because by the time the recording happens, a certain excitement about older songs has often been lost. This time, we built a "home" studio, and began all of the songs there. Whenever we had a group of 3-4 songs that we were excited about, we would go to a “proper” recording studio and finish recording them there. This way, the amount of time between the original idea and the finished song was pretty short (of the album’s 11 songs, 8 were finished at Carriage House in Stamford, CT and 2 at Palmetto Studio in Los Angeles). 7 didn’t have a producer in the traditional sense. We much preferred this, as it felt like the ideas drove the creativity, not any one person’s process. James Barone, who became our live drummer in 2016, played on the entire record. His tastes and the trust we have in him really helped us keep rhythm at the center of a lot of these songs. We also worked with Sonic Boom (Peter Kember). Peter became a great force on this record, in the shedding of conventions and in helping to keep the songs alive, fresh and protected from the destructive forces of recording studio over-production/over-perfection. The societal insanity of 2016-17 was also deeply influential, as it must be for most artists these days. Looking back, there is quite a bit of chaos happening in these songs, and a pervasive dark field that we had little control over. The discussions surrounding women’s issues were a constant source of inspiration and questioning. The energy, lyrics and moods of much of this record grew from ruminations on the roles, pressures and conditions that our society places on women, past and present. The twisted double edge of glamour, with its perils and perfect moments, was an endless source (see “L’Inconnue,” “Drunk in LA,” “Woo,” “Girl Of The Year,” “Last Ride”). In a more general sense, we are interested by the human mind's (and nature’s) tendency to create forces equal and opposite to those present. Thematically, this record often deals with the beauty that arises in dealing with darkness; the empathy and love that grows from collective trauma; the place one reaches when they accept rather than deny (see “Dark Spring,” “Pay No Mind,” “Lemon Glow,” “Dive,” “Black Car,” “Lose Your Smile”). The title, 7, itself is simply a number that represents our seventh record. We hoped its simplicity would encourage people to look inside. No title using words that we could find felt like an appropriate summation of the album. The number 7 does represent some interesting connections in numerology. 1 and 7 have always shared a common look, so 7 feels like the perfect step in the sequence to act as a restart or “semi-first.” Most early religions also had a fascination with 7 as being the highest level of spirituality, as in "Seventh Heaven.” At our best creative moments, we felt we were channeling some kind of heavy truth, and we sincerely hope the listeners will feel that. EXEK genre: Rock

If you’re the kind of person who would read a review of the second EXEK record on Paste Magazine dot com, then you’re probably also the kind of person who already knows that Melbourne, Australia is absolutely teeming with great bands right now. If you’re neither, know this: These days, it feels like every cool band that comes along comes from Melbourne. Many of these bands use electric guitars and bass and drums to create bright, upbeat pop-rock music, packed with catchy melodies and driving rhythms (even if their lyrics aren’t necessarily cheery). A smaller number of Melbourne bands are using guitars and bass and drums to do something entirely different. EXEK belongs to this second group. EXEK is a post-punk band in the truest sense of the term, lurching through the shadows and knocking shit over and sneering at innocent passers-by. Where many of their Melbourne mates draw obvious inspiration from the charming jangle-pop that came out of nearby New Zealand in the 1980s, EXEK bypasses that scene and draws a straight line back to fellow Melbourners The Birthday Party. EXEK started as a studio project for frontman Albert Wolski and then evolved into a quintet, including synthesizer and saxophone. The band’s debut, Biased Advice, came out in 2016, collecting the band’s past recorded material and presenting it in one spot. The follow-up, Ahead of Two Thoughts, expands on the embryonic feel of the debut. Opening track “U Mop” is a slithering jumble of parts: rubbery bass line, prickly guitars, a six-note sax riff, and Wolski’s dead-eyed rantings. “I’m sick of every bit of your shit,” he sings within the album’s first 16 seconds. Aaand…we’re off! Well, not quite. One of EXEK’s specialties is the slow burn, and some songs on Ahead of Two Thoughts take their time finding their particular path. “Punishment,” for example, clanks and clambers for 90 seconds before locking into a killer motorik groove that energizes all involved. And the tension that drives “Weight Loss (Henry’s Dream)” exists primarily in the interplay between its crescendoing guitar squalls and its unhurried, dubby rhythm section. EXEK has the good sense to never cut that tension, and instead leave the listener wanting more. Elsewhere, “Fluent in English” is the album’s guitar-heaviest track—the only place on Ahead of Two Thoughts where the buzz of six strings takes centerstage from the burble of four. “To Medicine” engages in some skittering Swell Maps-style noisemaking. And the penultimate track, “Elevator Etiquette,” somehow amalgamates searing guitars, eccentric drums, gleaming synths and unsettling echo into a seven-and-a-half-minute mishmash of mutant dance music. It is ambitious and strange and irresistible. You can say the same for EXEK.

“If you could imagine living in a time where you were barred from doing much, the only way one could unite masses without the government thinking a group of Africans was up to no good was to celebrate in dance and music via discos and music festivals… and shoo did we pull a crowd!” Professor Rhythm’s 1991 recording Professor 3 is a vivid reflection of urban South Africa as apartheid was ending. Thami Mdluli’s production project had young and old dancing to a sound that sought to unite Blacks within Southern Africa. The late 1970’s and 80’s had been trying times for people of color. Thammi says, “During these times, we as a country were experiencing apartheid segregation, very much similar to the segregation in the States. We couldn’t express ourselves how we really felt; it was a matter of being creative with your lyrics. It really wasn’t like today where you could say what you wanted to say provided it was radio-ready. In our times, we had to really watch what we put out there, as we were in fear of being jailed or not having our music played at all if we stepped onto the government’s toes. If you were a musician in these times, one had to be a master of words as politics was force-fed unto us. Our music gave hope to the hopeless.” Mdluli’s third instrumental album (which contains some background vocals, to be exact), portrays the moment when the dominant mbaqanga and American R&B-based bubblegum sounds being produced in Johannesburg and other urban centers were transforming into house and hip-hop-inspired kwaito. The pop of the 80’s and all that went with it—from the models of synths and drum machines to the lyrical style—gave way to a changing melodic emphasis and new, much slower tempi using a completely different rhythmic skeleton. Upbeat, chipper bubblegum, often with double-time breakdowns and upstroke syncopations, faded and the sounds began to more closely resemble those of contemporary Black America—where hip-hop was slowing down and the bass-lines and melodies were getting moodier, darker in general. At the same time house music had briefly reached mainstream acceptance in the States and that popularity continued to feed into awareness overseas. These two influences blended with the burgeoning house music scenes in Johannesburg and Pretoria as Professor Rhythm 3 was being produced in March 1991 (the same year apartheid ended). Mdluli explains, “We were Influenced by foreign bands and so people updated their sound.” According to Mdluli, the evolving sound was bolstered by widening availability of house and rap records from abroad while, most importantly, an increasing sense that apartheid might soon be finished was met with a new positivity vibe society. “1991, ’92, ’93… Mandela was released. People were upbeat, they were happy, the music was good.” Professor 3 came out on vinyl as the LP business was dying in South Africa and sold around 20,000 copies. It was mainly distributed on tape, which sold closer to 100,000. With the help of engineer Fab Rosso, the recording features backing vocalists from Mango Groove. This wasn’t Mdluli’s first success in music. He had been a known quantity in the industry for many years prior to making Professor Rhythm records, starting in the late 80’s. Early in his career he was part of the Hot Soul Singers, who recorded a handful of 7” singles and opened for the O’Jays during their tour of South Africa in 1981. On various shows where international names like Two Tons O’ Fun, Gene Chandler (“Duke of Earl”) and Clarence Carter, were performing in South Africa, Mdluli and his crew were the curtain raisers for the packed shows. The early career experience and burgeoning producing skills gleaned from his work with the Hot Soul Singers proved crucial. The group split and formed the new band called Sound Bust, working as a studio band for Ali Katt and Benjamin Ball’s disco-reggae album, Flash A Flashlight. Other group’s followed for Thami – including stints with the legendary CJB and Taboo, both of which provided the young musician with a real flair and taste for mbaqanga township pop music. By the mid-80’s, he was working behind-the-scenes on albums for CJB as well as the group Sox whose 1988 album Don’t Call Me sold more than 200,000 copies. In the late 80’s Mdluli moved from Eric Frisch Productions (where he had worked as a producer for a few years) to Tusk Records where he enjoyed a stunning rise in his career—a career which included a solo, township instrumental pop album of his own under the name Professor Rhythm. After making a half-dozen records as Professor Rhythm, Mdluli once again shifted his focus musically. By the mid-90’s he had veered off gospel music—and left playing in bands and started making his own solo recordings. His enormous success in the gospel realm in the years since is a remarkable story in its own right, but for now we are only dancing. releases June 1, 2018

“Dear listeners. This is the first track from my new album, Dead Magic! Me, my band and Randall Dunn spent 9 days in Copenhagen recording this record. The great pipe organ you’re hearing is a 20th century instrument located in Marmor Kirken, "The Marble Church", Copenhagen. Here is a poem for you by the Swedish writer Walter Ljungquist (1900-1974): ”Take the fate of a human being, a thin pathetic line that contours and encircles an infinite and unknown silence. It is in this very silence, in an only imagined and unknown centre, that legends are born. Alas! That is why there are no legends in our time. Our time is a time deprived of silence and secrets; in their absence no legends can grow." Please enjoy the music. Yours sincerely, Anna von Hausswolff"

Molchat Doma genre: Rock
release date 2020-03-27 publisher: Sacred Bones Records
The second LP by Belarussian trio Molchat Doma, Этажи (pronounced Etazhi, meaning “Floors”), was first released in 2018 on Berlin-based Detriti Records. It became a viral hit, garnering over one million views on YouTube and becoming a legitimate phenomenon on Bandcamp. The band may fly under the radar in their native Belarus, but they’ve reached huge audiences across Europe and beyond. Six separate vinyl pressings of the album have sold out in quick succession, and Sacred Bones Records is now thrilled to bring the record back in print for good. Molchat Doma (translated as “Houses Are Silent”), founded in 2017 in Minsk, Belarus, stands at the intersection of post-punk, new-wave and synth-pop. Dark yet danceable, and with a heavy dose of goth ethos, their music is reminiscent of the masters that predate them, but make no mistake: Molchat Doma creates a sound and meaning that is immediately recognizable as all their own. The band is comprised of Egor Shkutko, who sings the Russian lyrics in his deep monotone, Roman Komogortsev on guitar, synths, and drum machine, and Pavel Kozlov on bass and synths.

BRUIT ≤ genre: Rock
release date 2018-10-07 publisher: Elusive Sound
BRUIT \ˈbrü-ē\ [French, literally, noise] is a post-rock/modern classical quartet from Toulouse, France. Elusive Sound proudly presents the full digital release of “MONOLITH” by the post-rock/modern classical quartet BRUIT ≤ on October 7, 2018. Based in Toulouse, France, BRUIT \ˈbrü-ē\ [French, literally, noise] create incredibly expansive and emotive instrumental music of a conceptual nature, seamlessly merging ambient electronica, modern classical and instrumental rock. BRUIT’s synthetic sci-fi inspired ambiance of sound effects, soaring synths and deep bass tones reminiscent of film noir inspired dystopian fantasies, is organically enhanced by the ever present etherealism of their classical instrumentation and arrangements in spellbinding emotion-filledmelodies that climax in roaring drone driven post-rock. Life may be elsewhere, at another rhythm, a different scale, and you have forgotten it. Your body hosts a microscopic and elusive world that dies and is reborn every second. It is swarming with particles that will be the cause of your life and your death. It will be your first vertigo, The bloom. Then you look to the sky and realise that this inner world floats in a universe in which the human mind cannot comprehend borders and where you are no more significant than a grain of sand. Energy of unimaginable power has been developing for billions of years and it is also responsible for your life and death. It will be your second vertigo and with it you will fall. So who are you? Between the infinitely small and the incredibly large. Is your little daily problem still meaningless? Sit down by the vestiges of the monolith erected by your ancestors and take the time to think. Ask new questions rather than repeating old answers. – BRUIT ≤ All music composed by Clément Libes, Théophile Antolinos, Damien Gouzou and Matthieu Mullet.
