On one hand, the visuals have gotten prettier. The game really runs with that "Lost Worlds" theme and depicts mysterious locations. On the other hand, it's gotten even harder while barely changing any gameplay, aside from a few new bonuses and bricks.

Ricochet Xtreme Bangumi

genre: STG
In the past, this brick busting-thing was a way to clear space from mines. Now it's an intergalactic competition, and of course you've entered the contest.

There are 170 levels and 4 difficulty settings, each of which must be cleared of all bricks in this shareware game in the vein of Arkanoid. You control a bat at the bottom of the screen, which must stop a ball as it comes towards you and direct in back up the screen, which is where the bricks which need destroying reside. Helping you out are bonus features including extra balls, bombs which clear all surrounding bricks, and fireballs to remove blocks quickly.

I've always loved the graphics in this arkanoid and the creativity and variety of bricks and bonuses. The levels are very creative, but they do become more sadistic as it goes on. Some of them it feels like they're designed to piss you off. I like to play these kinds of games to relax, I don't need the frustration. I do recall the sequels being better though, so let's see.

Rave Racer is an arcade racing game that can be played by two people per cabinet for up to eight players total when up to four of them were linked together. It is the third arcade title in the Ridge Racer series and the follow-up to Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer 2 - and it added three new tracks to the original one, twelve new songs to the original five, force feedback steering and improved car and racetrack graphics.

I dunno if this has something to do with it being an arcade game, but the handling is leagues better than the first two. It's still not great, mainly because it's far from realistic, but it's at least responsive. The collision is still terrible though. Hitting something is like playing pinball.

The visuals continue the series' tradition of being amazing, but this time the music is too.

I almost liked this game, but then I realized I can't win a single race. Somehow at the very start all opponents leave me behind. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. But then just as I start catching up with them the timer runs out. Timers in racing games are just a terrible idea altogether. This game reminds me of Outrun 2006, but at least that game was way more forgiving. This one is just impossible.

Also, it only has 4 tracks and seemingly one car (unless I just couldn't figure out how to select another. But in my defence, I have the Japanese version of the game, and the configs in MAME are needlessly confusing). Which really means I'm not missing out on much.

Slipstream IGDB
2018-05-21
genre: Racing / Indie … platform: Linux / Windows / macOS / PlayStation 4 / Xbox One … developer: ansdor publisher: ansdor
Slipstream is a racing game influenced and inspired by the OutRun series, SEGA games in general, Initial D, Vaporwave & Synthwave aesthetics and the spirit of 90s arcades. It uses a real pseudo3D engine to provide an authentic retro experience in a modern shell. After being funded via kickstarter in 2016 and delayed more times than the developer would like to admit, it was released independently for PC in 2018.

After a somewhat troubled development period that lasted for more than two years since the successful Kickstarter campaign, back in January 2016, the game is finally ready to hit the road.

Inspired by the games, sounds and visuals of the late 80s and early 90s, Slipstream takes its basic formula from the arcade classic OutRun: a road trip across exotic landscapes around the world, with branching paths at the end of each stage allowing the player choose the next destination. The driving gameplay gets an additional layer of depth from two core mechanics, drifting, which is required to get around tight corners, and the gameâ€s namesake, the slipstream, a risky maneuver that gives the player a speed boost if pulled off right.

But it wouldn't be a racing game without actual competitive racing, and in Slipstream, it comes in three flavors. In Arcade Mode, the player will be challenged, in each stage, to a one-on-one duel with a rival driver from a colorful cast of characters. Quick Race Mode is exactly what it says on the tin, a single race in any of the gameâ€s 20 tracks. And, last but not least, Grand Prix Mode is a season of five races back to back, with scoreboards and money prizes used to upgrade the car.

Slipstream runs on a real pseudo3D custom game engine. That is: it uses good old-fashioned 2D sprite scaling to give the impression of depth, but there are no 3D models or “real” 3D graphics of any kind in the game. Itâ€s made to look and feel exactly like the games from the past, including some engine quirks, but taking advantage of the extra power of modern platforms to add conveniences such as a smooth 60fps framerate and texture filtering. The exclusive soundtrack was also created using real synthesizers from the era, such as the Yamaha DX-21, to make the game sound as authentic as it looks.

With vibrant pixel art graphics, powerful synth music and uncompromising gameplay, Slipstream aims to fulfill retro gamers' thirst for an old school arcade racer while also being modern enough to satisfy younger players.

I knew there was gonna be some of that awful retrowave aesthetic here, but I didn't know it permeated the entire game. All the colors are messed up, there's a pinkish tint on everything. This isn't a bad game, but to me this one aesthetic choice ruins everything.

In Microcivilization you explore , expand , exploit and exterminate all together in a pixel-art strategy-clicker game blend. Start the non-linear growth of your population and economical strength while discovering government combinations, hundreds of unique heroes and experimenting with ability builds for both combat and construction challenges.

You have many ways to build an obscenely rich and powerful nation. If oppressing your people by furious button smashing is your thing, master the clicker features to your benefit. If faith in your micro-people's good-will and productivity is your style, make use of your workshops and their passive and active abilities. Advancing in technology tree will unlock upgrades, military units, bonuses and new abilities to help you grow and steel yourself for threats to come.

Face hundreds of disasters, wars, diseases, social unrests, invasions and independence declarations that threaten your people. Sometimes you will get beaten, descend into dark ages, famine or ideological mayhem. But have no fear, losing is impossible. In fact, the harder the struggle, the more likely a grand hero emerges from the ashes.

Every crisis you overcome gives you a chance to gain a hero . For your micro-civilization heroes act as inventory items which boost your power. Though you can only have a handful of them equipped at any time, collecting heroes opens endless new effects on your industry, wealth, strength and stability. As you move forward, you will collect higher tiers of heroes, merge them with recipes and form sets to gain absurd powers.

Disasters in this game are no mere random number generator roll. You are in full control of all disaster risks. In fact you know the chance of them happening at any given time so you have chance to mitigate. Uninhabited houses? Chance of fire. Too many people crammed in tight space? Small-pox will probably visit you soon.

Whether by bad luck, or your risk neglection, when a crisis occurs it can be overcome by combat . Fire can be extinguished, disease can be withstood or cured, invasion can be repelled. Regardless of what the problem is, it is always a number of brave micro-people willing to give their lives, who defeat the crisis. In every fight, People are your life , Economy is your strength and Heroes are your weapons . Combine these with workshop abilities and master the combat to become a force to be reckoned with.

History has too many stories to tell in one go. In order to reach the metaphorical stars, you will need to trace back to ancient ages several times, each with a higher purpose. Your Ascension tree contains many challenges organized into Difficulty Tiers each brining new features into the game, more difficult enemies but also access to more powerful heroes, world wonders and ability modifications.

One of my earliest Sega games and upon revisit one of the worst I've ever played. The movement is probably the floatiest I've ever seen, it's impossible to stop when you want to. There's a massive delay input and your default attack hits below the first flying enemies unless you perform it two more times in a row. So not only is it hard to time it because of the delay, but you also have to time three attacks instead of one. I can't make it past even the first few enemies.

The choice of 8-bit graphics makes a lot of sense for indie devs, but I really don't understand the conscious decision to revert to Castlevania 2's controls and movement, when modern engines can do so much better out of the box. The inclusion of more modern moves then, like the slide, feels very anachronistic and jarring. Once you discover the slide, you never wanna walk again because of just how slow your character is in comparison. I think from Castlevania 4 onwards it's been pretty much universally agreed that the movement has improved and the combat has grown more varied and nuanced.

A lot of these Castlevania clones coming out these days feel like remixes of the old games. Just taking features from various games and mixing them together, instead of introducing anything new. I would rather just play Castlevania 2 for the retro experience or play a more modern one for the modern features.

I know the SSX series is worshipped, and, growing up, I always wanted to play these games, but they were console exclusives, and by the time I managed to get a PS2 and a PSP, I kinda lost interest. Still I felt a sort of obligation to play it to appease my childhood self. And I gotta say, this doesn't really impress me. I mean, gameplay-wise this just feels like THPS, and the presentation is kinda what you'd expect from a snowboarding game. It's alright.

I couldn't figure out how to do those challenges where you're supposed to just earn points by jumping back and forth doing tricks. And I didn't feel like looking this up.

I think I might revisit the SSX series some day, but in that case I'll probably go with a different entry. I have a feeling that this little PSP spin-off might not be the best representation of the series.

What is the point of a Mass Effect game? I always thought it was role-playing with the emphasis on the story. Sure, they all have combat systems, but those always felt secondary, as they were never anything more than a generic cover shooter. But Infiltrator is simply a generic cover shooter, and not even a good one.

The controls are clunky, the AI is braindead, the level design is linear. There's a tacked-on ranking system that has no reason to be here. You can't even point-shoot.

The graphics are technically impressive, but aesthetically sterile. The game looks almost like a Unity asset flip.

Honestly, the only reason I'm giving it 1.5 stars is because it's a mobile game, so I'm cutting it some slack. But there's really no reason to play this.
