So as of yesterday I am retired, had a 37+ year career working in #NASA human spaceflight, Space Shuttle and then the #Orion spacecraft. I set my retirement date in the hope that the #Artemis 2 mission, Orion’s first crewed flight, would have completed by then but Feb launch was delayed and by “cosmic coincidence” Artemis 2 finally launched yesterday - my final day. Very proud of all my colleagues and all the hard work we’ve done to get to this point. Onward to the #moon - and beyond. Ad astra.

Black and white photo of the moon with a little more than half of its surface lit by sunlight.

Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman took this picture of Earth from the Orion spacecraft after completing the translunar injection burn. There are two auroras (top right & bottom left) and zodiacal light (bottom right) is visible as the Earth eclipses the Sun.

Our crew at the observatory has CAPTURED THE ORION SPACECRAFT... despite the weather in #Toronto #canada ... the low position of #ArtemisII in the sky and having had to take the science ccd off for repairs.

Enjoy everyone, now you too can wave at the pixel of #jeremyhansen ! Video is up on the @AllanICarswellObservatory YouTubechannel! https://www.youtube.com/live/dT_ykVY1VaI?si=wDd_GQHUpdYP0-qy

A still from the Allan I Carswell Observatory 1m telescope showing the position of the Orion craft on the background stars as featured in the video link. There's an arrow annotated to point at it and text that says 'Orion Craft, Artemis II'

Prediction.
A decade from now, low-Earth orbit will be inaccessible after Starlink (now bankrupt) precipitates a massive #Kessler catastrophe. Years/generations will pass before new launches to #space are possible.
No #Moon missions; no #Mars missions.
#Musk's name is cursed (even more...).

Two Cats and a Full Moon is a watercolour painting in landscape format painted by the artist Karen Kaspar.
Two cats sit on the roof of a house and look up into the dark night sky, which is illuminated by a bright yellow round full moon. The two cats are seen as dark silhouettes from behind, silhouetted against the bright full moon.

Clarity on other worlds.

The moon is in focus, the tree is blurry. Light and dark clouds hover nearby.

narrow residential alleyway captured at night under a dim sky where the moon is visible. On the left, a bright street lamp vividly illuminates a cluster of tangled, low-hanging overhead electrical and utility wires strung precariously close to the corrugated metal roofs. The passage is bordered by a weathered concrete wall on the left and a two-story structure with horizontal wooden siding on the right. In the cramped space between the buildings, various items, including a large red container and discarded furniture, are piled up near an alley entrance.

narrow residential alleyway at night in a densely built neighborhood, illuminated by a bright, glaring streetlamp attached to a utility pole. On the right, the weathered wooden siding of a multi-story house is visible, complete with a small window-unit air conditioner. Tangled bundles of overhead electrical and utility wires crisscross overhead against a dark, overcast night sky where a dim, hazy moon breaks through. In the background, the glowing light reflects off a red corrugated metal roof and a narrow walkway flanked by makeshift fences and structures.
