“Tufa, Sky, and Water” — An island of tufa formations under early morning sky, Mono Lake.

I think of this photograph, in part, as a study in tones. I had been photographing a brilliant sunrise in color, but as the first wild sunrise colors diminished I began to think about monochrome. (Of course, my camera being digital, I was capturing color images, though monochrome results were in my mind.) The brightest areas of the clouds were extremely bright, while the facing side of the tufa formations, being backlit, were very close to black. My plan was to control the bright areas in the exposure and then lift the shadows in post, just enough to hint at details on the tufa.

La imagen muestra el espigón del Puerto de Peñíscola visto desde la Playa Sur, en un tratamiento en blanco y negro que acentúa el contraste entre el cielo y el mar.

En primer plano, unas rocas oscuras y afiladas emergen del agua en la parte inferior de la fotografía, con pequeñas olas rompiendo suavemente contra ellas y generando espuma blanca que resalta sobre el tono oscuro de la piedra. El mar ocupa la mitad inferior del encuadre con una superficie relativamente calma, salpicada de leves ondulaciones y, hacia la derecha, algunas rocas sumergidas que rompen la lisura del agua.

Cruzando el horizonte de izquierda a derecha se extiende el muro de piedra del espigón del puerto, una estructura baja y alargada que se adentra en el mar. En su extremo derecho se distingue un pequeño faro de señalización marítima, elemento característico de la entrada al puerto de Peñíscola. Se aprecia también la silueta de una figura humana diminuta sobre el espigón, hacia la izquierda, que aporta escala a la construcción.

La parte superior de la imagen está dominada por un cielo con nubes dispersas de textura suave, iluminadas de forma que sugieren la luz difusa y horizontal propia de la mañana. El degradado tonal, de nubes más densas a la izquierda a un cielo más despejado hacia la derecha, junto con el reflejo tenue en el agua, refuerza la sensación de calma y de una atmósfera matinal típica de la costa mediterránea.
El conjunto —horizonte marcado por la línea recta del espigón, textura rocosa en primer plano y cielo nuboso— produce una composición minimalista y muy propia del blanco y negro marino, con fuerte contraste entre las zonas claras del cielo y agua, y las zonas oscuras de las rocas y el muro del espigón.

Sidewalk Symmetry

A black and white photo of a section of sidewalk. There are three vertical lines scored in the sidewalk concrete, evenly spaced. The center line is a bit thicker than the other two, but in the center of the frame, straddling the center line, is an almost perfectly circular plant, some would say a weed, which has chosen this crack in the world as its home. The plant is flat, with tiny leaves, as if it's trying not to be noticed. I doubt most people who pass by here notice it. Yet, here she is in all her symmetrical beauty!

Evening falls across Sunderland's River Wear as it flows through the Port of Sunderland on the final stage of its journey to the North Sea.
This was captured yesterday (Saturday) evening with one of the regular small fishing boats moored in the foreground and the somewhat larger 'Normand Frontier' a modern, multipurpose Offshore Construction Vessel, sailing under the Norwegian flag and at the time of posting, berthed at Corporation Quay.
This view is looking east, not long after sunset and the glowing red horizontal band in the sky, opposite the setting sun, is often called the 'Belt of Venus'.
The phenomenon, can start around 5 minutes before sunset and last for up to 10 minutes after as sunlight is backscattered off dust, particles, and air molecules high up in the atmosphere.
The darker area directly beneath the Belt of Venus is actually the Earth's shadow as it rises into the atmosphere.
