I kept bumping into Common Kingfisher. This one was chased off of the branch by the Chinese Pond Heron before I could see some actions, spotted at a small park in Putian City last week.

Yesterday I received a new battery for an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) that had given up the ghost. Well… not completely — the unit still powered on, but the battery refused to charge. This isn’t my first rodeo with UPS units, so I set about removing what I assumed was the battery access panel. On the bottom was a single screw practically screaming, “I secure the battery door!” So I removed it and tried to slide the panel open, only to be thwarted from every angle.
Then I consulted Microsoft Copilot, which—helpfully—told me to do exactly what I was already doing. At one point it even suggested hitting the thing with a rubber mallet, a recommendation I enjoyed far more than I should have. Still, the panel didn’t budge.
Finally, I removed every outer screw, pulled the front and rear panels loose, and discovered the truth: there is no battery access panel. Instead, the entire UPS is a two‑piece clamshell, and the only way to reach the battery is to split the case open.
The molded plastic design didn’t help matters. It looked exactly like a battery door existed — complete with that screaming little screw on the bottom — but the actual battery compartment was on the opposite side of the chassis than the screw suggested. Not that it mattered, since there was no door at all.
To add insult to injury, the owner’s manual confidently instructs you to “slide or pull the battery compartment cover.” Maybe that’s a practical joke. More likely, CyberPower changed the design somewhere along the way and never bothered updating the manual.

Reflections at Low Tide
This image caught my eye partially, because of the sandbar and the tidal pool but mostly because of the odd perspective. In the upper left a ring-billed gull walks down a sandbar fro left to right. In the bottom right a snowy egret forages in a tidal pool. The gull farther away yet somehow appears larger than the egret which is a much larger species. It is an example of how photography can bend reality.
