Reflections at Low Tide

This image caught my eye partially, because of the sandbar and the tidal pool but mostly because of the odd perspective. In the upper left a ring-billed gull walks down a sandbar fro left to right. In the bottom right a snowy egret forages in a tidal pool. The gull farther away yet somehow appears larger than the egret which is a much larger species. It is an example of how photography can bend reality.

35° and rising. Very little tad of breeze not enough to cool anything. Shimmer of heat rises from roofs.

Local forecast has it for 38°+ this weekend. Mid September. Swallows and Martins still around. Scores of stork nests of which 2 occupied, one each, the rest empty.

Nearest city is 20 miles away and it has the major oil/facility and port. Pipes, tubes, transporting some sort gas which must be kept at -150° or else the gas will ignite, running above the ground mostly. Just imagine... a tsunami...

# Looking for camera advice

Hey bird photographers - I currently use a Nikon CoolPix B600. I'm assuming I don't have to tell you about its shortcomings. I'm interested in upgrading to a DSLR - thinking not mirrorless to keep costs down.

I know ideally I'd want a 100-400mm or 100-500mm lens for bird photography, but that might break the budget

Also, considering starting with a 300mm lens, which with a 1.5 sensor crop factor could give you the effect of a longer zoom lens. Not sure what that does to quality though. I'm not looking to sell 24 x 36 prints - photos are just for me or to share online.

Given the above, hit me with your favorite body/lens combos that I should look at. The budget is in the $1000 neighborhood—pre-owned is likely the route here.
