Black-and-white photo of a person lying face down on a bed, arm extended with a leaf tattoo on the upper arm. A small curly-haired dog rests against the person’s side, and a cat sleeps on a round tray near the person’s hand. Rumpled blankets and clothing fill the foreground, with a blurred cat and wall posters in the background.

I recently succeeded in capturing a complex scene—more by chance than anything—at a demonstration in Rostock’s city harbor. The shot taken just a second later showed only the usual jumble of people. But here, everything comes together for me: the foreground, middle ground, and background; several small stories; a standout subject; and, as a little joke, the flagpole that seems to be growing out of the person’s head. Normally, I tend to prefer more uncluttered compositions. Recently, I’ve come to appreciate such complex photos through Matt Stuart’s work. And even though I can think of almost exclusively color examples of this genre—I actually like this one better in black and white.
