If you prefer gritty over pretty, there's nothing better than going around to the back of a strip mall.

The # #ErieCanal path at dusk after a first snow. I was riding my bike home from work and was carrying my newish Canon RP rather than my usual compact camera. The scene felt like I had wandered into Narnia.
A foggy night outside the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester NY. I was shooting handheld with my Lumix compact and was pleasantly surprised at the quality.
Night sky and trees lit only by stars and a campfire below. In the third shot, I used light painting with a small LED flashlight on the trees.
Each winter, one of our neighbors lights two trees in their yard. It’s a challenge to make the lights bright while preserving detail. These are from three different cameras, as my gear (and dynamic range)improved: A Canon PowerShot G15, RP, and R5.
Same lit trees as before, processed in HDR—unsure if BS will display the greater dynamic range.
I realized the reason the tree was so much darker in the last shot wasn’t the exposure but that there was no snow on the branches.
