I recently succeeded in capturing a complex scene—more by chance than anything—at a demonstration in Rostock’s city harbor. The shot taken just a second later showed only the usual jumble of people. But here, everything comes together for me: the foreground, middle ground, and background; several small stories; a standout subject; and, as a little joke, the flagpole that seems to be growing out of the person’s head. Normally, I tend to prefer more uncluttered compositions. Recently, I’ve come to appreciate such complex photos through Matt Stuart’s work. And even though I can think of almost exclusively color examples of this genre—I actually like this one better in black and white.

Full moonrise through the clouds.
September 27, 2026. Wolverine Lake, Michigan.
When surveying some of the stained glass panels in the Palma Cathedral, I came across this curious one which appears to have a reanimated skeleton bench pressing a rock with a child underneath it shrugging as if it doesn't know what is going on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Curious clouds shapes provide a background for crows and flying machines.
As the evening progressed, the clouds were canvas for one of the finer sunsets we’ve had in a while.
