Mein - vielleicht - bestes Foto 2025

A long overdue #Introduction.

I take #CreativeCommons photographs (Mostly of #Nature) which I contribute to #WikimediaCommons and when appropriate also to #iNaturalist. I've uploaded over 20,000 photos to #Wikimedia and over 12,000 observations to #iNat (of more than 3,000 species).

I only post my own photos on this account (all of which are #CCBYSA) and make occasional posts about Wikimedia and iNat.

A photo looking down a hill at the city of Oslo. The Oslofjord is visible in the distance. There are many green trees and the sky is filled with hazy clouds.

4/5 Norwich Cathedral SWIPE
The cloisters and vaulted ceiling (see 2 and 3 in this set) both have medieval carved bosses which largely escaped the iconoclastic destruction. Here are four from the cloisters.

#photography #churchphotography #medieval #medievalart

Image 1: A carved and painted ceiling boss depicting a group of figures gathered around a table set with dishes, surrounded by ribbed vaulting radiating outward. The figures wear medieval dress in red, green, and gold tones, with an animal figure visible at the bottom center.
Image 2: A weathered, unpainted stone ceiling boss showing several carved figures with raised arms, their faces eroded or missing, set against wooden panelling. Traces of red pigment remain in the recesses, with cobwebs visible among the carved details.
Image 3: A painted stone corbel showing two standing figures in green tunics with gold belts flanking a central kneeling or fallen figure in red drapery, set against a background of gilded foliage and a dark branching tree motif.
Image 4: A carved and painted ceiling boss depicting a group of armored figures in blue-grey armor gathered around a rectangular coffin or chest painted in teal and gold, with a draped figure in red and gold to the left, set within radiating ribbed vaulting.

Cabin life

Nothing to do. Just waiting for tea and watching the light go down.

#FensterFreitag #WindowFriday
#forest #photography

Photograph of the dark interior of a cabin, showing a small rectangular window through which a green coniferous tree is visible and in focus. To the right of the window is a two-shelf, rough hewn wooden shelf, out of focus, on which are stacks of plates, glasses, cups, and a pile of linens. Cooking utensils hang on the side of the shelf. The rest of the cottage is in darkness.

Black and white macro photograph of yarrow flowers, still open in October, composed of very small flowers in the centre and single-petaled flowers around the edges. None of the flowers are really in focus and some are blurred behind, with stems and foliage, giving a sense of movement.

Photograph of a dirt road, partially covered in fallen orange leaves, bordered on either side by tall birch trees with very white trunks, which contrast with the yellow foliage still at their tops and with the smaller green conifers behind them. A cloudy white sky is visible through their canopy. This soft colour combination is my favourite of autumn.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Saúde (Church Of Our Lady Of Health), Serpa, Portugal

Inside this Portuguese cemetery lies a Baroque gem. The old chapel had a gold-gilded altar and polychrome tiled walls. A small wooden door leads to a hidden ossuary, a place filled with ornate wooden caskets. The carved boxes containing bones are blanketed in dust. A hauntingly beautiful reflection on mortality.

A retro hotel near the shoreline of Lake Balaton in Hungary. The state promoted domestic tourism during the 1960s/1970s, providing subsidised holiday packages to workers. Numerous hotels, such as this one, sprang up all over the scenic Lake Balaton area.

The hotel likely operated into the early 1990s, when luxury hotels and resorts were built. These shabby socialist-era hotels closed down as they struggled to compete with modern resorts.

The image features a bright blue sky as the background with a vibrant bird of paradise flower on the left and a small hummingbird perched on the right. The bird of paradise flower has striking orange and blue petals emerging from a sturdy, green stem that curves upwards with a hint of red at its base. The hummingbird, with its iridescent orange and rust-colored plumage, is perched on the tip of the flower’s stem. Its body is petite with a long, slender beak pointed forward.

Bright Smurf, Big Smurf (they can't hold you down)

#Fungi #Mushtodon #Nature #Photography #Smurf

A dense cluster of fungi growing on a rotting tree stump in a forest during autumn. The mushrooms are growing in layered, overlapping groups. Their caps vary in color, transitioning from a light yellowish-tan or golden-brown at the edges and in the center of the younger, upper mushrooms, to a darker, rich brown in the larger, more mature specimens below.

Many caps exhibit a slight concentric ring pattern or a change in color towards the center. They have a generally convex to flattened shape and appear smooth and somewhat moist or velvety.

The fungi are attached to a dark, textured wood surface, which is the tree material they are feeding on. The surrounding area is the forest floor, scattered with leaf litter in various shades of brown and yellow.

A top-down view of a forest floor rich in dark, earthy tones and fall colors. A dense layer of fallen leaves covers the ground, primarily in shades of deep orange, rust, and brown. Scattered patches of green grass and dry, pale-colored plant material are visible.

Slightly above the center of the frame, a mushroom's domed, scarlet cap instantly draws the eye. The small, distinct white flecks contrast with its bright red color, giving it a storybook appearance. Near the bottom center is a smaller splash of vivid red. A ruby-hued bloom finds itself adrift on the forest floor.

A branch which enters the frame from the bottom right corner forks on the left. It has three fresh plum blossom blooms and many young buds ready to open. Sunlight streams in from behind the tree but everything but the branch is out of focus. The blooms have tiny delicate white petals and yellow stamen.

🍓Move over James & The Giant Peach, this is Janine & The Oversized Strawberry!

Languishing in a disused field in #Poland this sun-faded behemoth fruit was once a kind of roadside attraction for a large strawberry farm. The owner clearly had some quirky marketing ideas. The farm closed long ago, but this sad-looking giant strawberry lies forgotten in a weed-choked field.

Also, does anyone else think this has some serious #Fallout vibes?
