#throwbackthursday Timeline

Late last September, a leaf peeping trip briefly became a moose peeping adventure. If you look closely, you can see in their eyes: "DO YOU MIND!!!?!!!" 😂

Two of my wife's great great grans for #ThrowbackThursday this week. One had a nickname that was then adopted by my wife's sister for some reason, despite the nickname not really relating to either of their names.

#Photography

Scan of a very old, faded, black and white photo with some signs of damage in the form of scratches and tears around the edges. The photo is a portrait of two women standing in a garden against a brick wall that comes up to their torsos and is topped with diagonal trellis work that reaches head height. The two women are standing next to each other, one with her arm around the shoulder of the other. Both women are old with short, lightly curled grey hair, and both have similar dark clothing on. They could almost be taken for sisters.

The San Francisco Chinese Hospital,

This is a black and white photo in landscape format of the arched doorway into the former San Francisco Chinese Hospital with the remainder of the building demolished around it. Chinatown, San Francisco (2013).

Centred in the photo are the remains of the masonry entrance consisting on the outside of a few metres of vertical white brickwork but only a few bricks wide. Inside of the bricks are a pair of square white pillars with two ornate columns on the front. Within, is the wide arched entrance, perhaps a little less than two metres wide. On top of the archway is a horizontal masonry lintel with 'Chinese Hospital' on the left side, 东华医院 in the centre and 'Erected AD 1924' on the right side. On top is a tangle of bent metal and broken masonry. Visible through the archway is the demolition site of the former hospital with a large pile of rubble and steelwork to the right side. Again, visible through the arch and in the distance is the brick wall of an older urban building with numerous dark rectangular windows. To the right and above the arch are some city high-rise apartment buildings. Above is a clear and cloudless sky, rendered a milky white.

Vision of another era

We were lucky to see some of the last caribou south of the St. Lawrence River at the summit of Mont Jacques-Cartier. They are the last representatives of the large herds of woodland caribou that once occupied southern Quebec.

The woodland caribou herd of the mountain ecotype is now estimated at about 30 animals in the park.

Mount Jacques-Cartier, Gaspésie National Park. September 2026.

Photograph of a male caribou seen from afar, with brown body, white neck and rump, and antlers on its head. The soil is alpine-type, with the top of this mountain made up of rocks covered in mint-green lichen and small, very low, yellow and green grasses. Behind the caribou, the summit of the neighbouring mountain, called "Dos de baleine" (whale's back), a grey wall of rocks and some patches of vegetation. Above, the sky is pure pale blue.
