Saw a monarch butterfly in the yard a couple days ago. Hadn't had a chance to see any up close yet this year.

"Flying to the Light" is a recent work. I'm trying to keep it as a philosophy...

Had a lovely visitor to the garden the other day👇.

Haven't posted much lately. Been really busy, my big lens in on the fritz, & I'm getting ready for back surgery this fall so my posts/replies will be sporadic.

Closeup photograph of a yellow eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly grasping a pink bee balm floret with out of focus bee balm flowers and green foliage in the background. The butterfly takes up most of the right center frame. It is grasping a floret with its legs, its body is hanging downward, and its proboscis is inserted into the same floret down while facing the flower with its wings open leaving its back, the back of its head, and the back of its wings visible. Eastern tiger swallowtail butterflies have yellow wings with black edging, short black vertical stripes near the wing top, yellow and black veining, black edges along the sides and bottom of their wings with yellow scallop-shaped spotting and small metallic-blue and orange spots near the bottom-center of the wings, black bodies and heads covered in fine hairs, yellow stripes along either side of the back and head, large black compound eyes, two long, black antennae, and six black, segmented legs, and a long black proboscis used for probing the interiors of flower for nectar.

A quiet little walk today, pleasant though.

A lovely Spotted Wood butterfly posing on a bramble leaf showing why it gets its name.

ELEPHANT HAWK-MOTH

Two visitors last night, and arguably our most colourful large moth.

A direct head-on macro photograph of an Elephant Hawk-moth balancing on the tip of a person's index finger. The moth faces the camera showing its fluffy face covered in deep magenta-pink. Two very large, round, greenish-yellow compound eyes are prominently visible on either side of its pink palps which extend down like two goofy teeth. Extending widely to the left and right are its thick, tapered antennae, which are detailed with fine ridges and coloured in a pale pinkish-orange. The top of its thorax features a thick patch of golden-olive fur. Its long, thin legs are mostly white with pink accents and they extend downward to grip the finger. In the background, its vibrant pink and olive wings are swept upward and slightly out of focus, set against a soft blur of green garden leaves and purple flowers.jpg].

More July outings. A nice hike on the Iron Goat Trail near Stevens Pass (7/8/26). This hike is along the old railroad grade, not difficult, wildflowers, butterflies, and tunnels. Looking back at these photos I see the summer is fading away.

8 yr old Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The butterflies he had tended as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. When he released them into the wild, they would fly right back to him. Was it possible they actually remembered him?

Jo wrote a letter to an entomologist at Georgetown University, Dr. Martha Weiss. He asked if she could help him design an experiment, and she said yes.

Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70% of them still avoided the scent. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis, yet the memory survived anyway. Then he bred them.

The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Without ever experiencing the vibration, generations of butterflies inherited an aversion to lavender their grandmother had been taught to fear.

Jo presented his findings at the International Congress of Entomology in Kobe in 2024. He was 10.

A second grader wrote a letter to a Georgetown professor, and together they found evidence that butterflies can pass memories down through generations.
