Macro photo of a Flammulaster (as always, not entirely sure, check iNatlink for updates on the ID) growing out of decaying wood against a black background. This tiny brown mushroom is fuzzy, has a lighter stem and grows slightly curved. Made by stacking about 100 photos

Greetings from Narnia!

We continue to find pinewood king bolete #mushrooms but they're still exceptionally rare and the aftermath of the nearly 4-month drought through the summer continues. Chance finds in our walks are rare and far between and only sparse secluded spots that we pinpointed the previous years remain loyal.

But the word that they can be found had spread among Narnian people by now so the forests are full of frustrated foragers carrying empty baskets. Thing is, these are symbiotic mushrooms. They still persist underground in same locations they could be found the previous years but they're unlikely to produce fruiting bodies in abundance where their host trees struggled for so long and are still recovering from the stress of the prolonged drought. And that's regardless the spates of rain we had recently. So the chance of success can be evaluated from afar even just by visually examining health of their host trees.

Saprophytic species can be found much easier however as they feed on decaying matter and those include some rather tasty members so just adjusting expectations and maybe expanding the list of sought after species a bit could let them avoid the occasional forager frustration in the future. Just a kind suggestion 😉

A fungi family photoshoot 😁

Big thanks to @jan_mayen for letting me scribble on their photo, which can be found here: https://social.tchncs.de/@jan_mayen/117335994458116653

Original alt txt: Eine Gruppe von vier Flschenstäublinge auf einem Holzstück. Die äußeren sind die größeren und dazwischen zwei deutlich kleinere. Der Hintergrund ist grünlich unscharf.
My addition: Each puffball now has a face and arms drawn on, to create a family photo. The smallest is is holding onto a stick and looking in shock at their larger sibling who waves to the camera while sticking their tongue out. The two larger ones are smiling, the one on the left looking to camera, the one on the right looking down at the wee baby.

Artist's Bracket (G. applanatum), I scored the pore surface with a twig and it looks like I marked it with a sharpie.

A sloping embankment of textured moss dominates the foreground, peppered with hundreds of tiny, stalk-like plants with rounded tips. These small botanical elements create a rhythmic pattern across the irregular surface of the ground. Rising from this base is a single mushroom supported by a slender, pale stem. Its cap forms a bell shape, exposing fine, radiating gills along its underside in muted tan tones. The sharp textures of the foreground transition into a soft-focus background where mossy greens and golden yellow hues blend together.

The autumn shift has properly taken hold now and I’m loving it. So are these little guys! https://buff.ly/cuJI0Ua

Close-up photograph of a dense cluster of small, pale woodland mushrooms sprouting from a dark, moss-covered tree stump. The mushroom caps are smooth and dome-shaped, with creamy white edges and warm yellowish-tan centres. Slender, curving pale stems tangle together beneath the canopy of caps. In the foreground, a mossy twig rests in soft focus, while the shadowy, textured bark creates a moody, earthy background.

I didn't want to touch this little, but I couldn't work out if it was a little puffball fungi or an oak marble gall made by wasps? Anyone have an idea? https://buff.ly/9uTYmAl

A low-angle macro photograph of a woodland ground in autumn. In the lower foreground, a small, smooth, pale cream-coloured sphere rests among damp soil, green moss patches, and dry brown leaves. Behind it, several young green ivy leaves rise on thin stems against a soft, blurred background of golden-brown leaf litter and deep forest shadows. The lighting is diffused and natural, highlighting the contrast between the pale round object and the rich earth tones of the forest floor.

Wood Cauliflower Fungus (Sparassis crispa).
I took this photograph in my garden 4 years ago. It was growing at the base of a mature Scots Pine, which has since died and come down. Although the tree stump is still there, the Wood Cauliflower has not reappeared. Like many tree fungi, Wood Cauliflower is parasitic and eventually kills its host.
The plus side is that Wood Cauliflower is edible when cooked. Smells cheesy, tastes nutty!😋
