Yesterday, my wife and I went for a walk through Surea Dorst. We thought we were simply going mushroom hunting—and we did find some—but somehow it turned into one of those walks where everything seems to fall into place.

Although, strangely, we didn't have the best feeling when we first entered the forest.

Then I noticed this little branch of common honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum), hanging quietly against the dark forest background.

The bright red berries stood out beautifully against the green leaves and deep shadows of the forest. These berries are an important food source for wildlife, although they are not suitable for us to eat.

I photographed them with my Canon 5D and Sigma 100–400mm, using the long lens to isolate the branch and let the darker surroundings become a natural backdrop.

Sometimes you go looking for mushrooms and find something else entirely.

An unusually bold encounter up at Slievethoul, Co. Dublin today. Stopped dead and looked right back at me close by. https://buff.ly/8DM3bWy

A full-length vertical shot of a deer standing on a damp, mossy woodland trail beneath a low arch of leafy branches. The deer is facing away from the camera on slender legs, its head turned around over its left shoulder to look directly forward with large dark eyes and upright ears. Its coat is a warm chestnut-brown with subtle pale spots, featuring a distinctive white rump patch outlined in dark fur. Dappled sunlight filters through the dense foliage overhead, illuminating the deer against the shadowy, earth-toned undergrowth of roots and fallen leaves.

Spotted this cluster of mushrooms resting along a damp mossy bank today. Funnel fungi or something else? Drop your ID ideas below!

I was out exploring the woods the other afternoon and this massive bracket fungus caught my eye right at ground level. It was practically wrestling its way through a thick tangle of ivy and green grass. https://buff.ly/HtOzmlR

A top-down close-up photo of a large, tiered bracket fungus growing close to the ground. The mushroom caps form an overlapping, scalloped semicircular rosette with undulating, wavy pale edges and a soft brown, textured surface. Dark green leaves of common ivy, blades of woodland grass, and patches of green moss weave naturally through and around the fungus. The lighting is soft and diffused, creating a calm, natural, and earthy forest floor atmosphere.

One of my favourite places on Dartmoor is Wistman's Wood, and I took a friend to see it, on a warm and sunny day, earlier this month.
A short walk from the road takes you to a boulder-strewn hillside, densely-packed with stunted oaks, mosses, lichens, and ferns; a small oasis of residual temperate rainforest in the barren expanse of the Moor.
It's a magical spot.

A dense thicket of dwarf oak trees sits amongst boulders in dappled sunlight. Most surfaces are covered in moss, lichen or fern. The whole scene is very green.
