A Second World War air raid shelter, filled with fascinating portraits scrawled on the walls.

Inside one of the chambers is a time capsule underground art gallery, of sorts. The walls are covered with around 20 portraits, mostly drawn in charcoal or soot. Many depict women with 1940s hairstyles, alongside soldiers and well-dressed men. Some are signed with initials.

La imagen es una fotografía en blanco y negro tomada junto a un camino de tierra en Santa Cruz de Mudela, Ciudad Real, con luz de mañana clara y algo de neblina o bruma suave en el cielo.

El elemento central es un molino de viento de tipo americano (aerogenerador de bombeo de agua), con su característica estructura de torre metálica reticulada en forma de celosía triangulada. La rueda multipala está orientada casi de frente, y en la parte trasera se distingue la veleta orientadora con la inscripción “ALTAGRI”, que actúa como timón para alinear el rotor con el viento.
La torre se eleva sobre un terreno de vegetación silvestre: hierbas altas y secas en primer plano, arbustos densos y un árbol seco y deshojado junto a la base de la estructura, en un paisaje rural de secano típico de la meseta de Ciudad Real.

Al fondo, hacia la derecha de la composición, se aprecia una loma o cerro suave en el horizonte, junto a un campo de cultivo que se extiende hacia esa elevación. En el lado izquierdo, parcialmente oculta entre la vegetación, hay una pequeña construcción o caseta de aspecto sencillo, vinculada al uso agrícola del terreno.

El cielo ocupa gran parte del encuadre vertical, mostrando una tonalidad uniforme con una fina nube alargada que cruza diagonalmente la escena, aportando dinamismo a la zona superior. El tratamiento en blanco y negro, con buen contraste entre las hierbas iluminadas por la luz rasante de la mañana y las sombras de la vegetación, refuerza la sensación de calma y aislamiento propia de los paisajes agrícolas de secano castellano-manchegos, y realza la textura tanto del hierro oxidado del molino como de la vegetación seca del entorno.

Yesterday, my wife and I went for a walk through Surea Dorst. We thought we were simply going mushroom hunting—and we did find some—but somehow it turned into one of those walks where everything seems to fall into place.

Although, strangely, we didn't have the best feeling when we first entered the forest.

Then I noticed this little branch of common honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum), hanging quietly against the dark forest background.

The bright red berries stood out beautifully against the green leaves and deep shadows of the forest. These berries are an important food source for wildlife, although they are not suitable for us to eat.

I photographed them with my Canon 5D and Sigma 100–400mm, using the long lens to isolate the branch and let the darker surroundings become a natural backdrop.

Sometimes you go looking for mushrooms and find something else entirely.
