A photo taken from near the base of a mature tree, looking in an upward direction. The crown of this tree has yellowish orange leaves during the autumn season. The trees around it still have green leaves, so the image looks a bit like a sea of colour surrounded by green. Patches of blue sky can also be seen around the top of the tree. The trunk of the tree is about one and a half feet in diameter. The photo definitely has an autumn feel to it.

Smurfs Log: Buttons

* Part of the "Housecleaning (Things Left in My Mom's House)" series

Mom moved out of her house about four months ago. I have been spending a few hours every week organising things. Today I began the final leg of this journey: sorting her sewing room.

Throughout her life, she collected thousands of buttons of all shapes and colours. I'm finding it very difficult to decide what to do with this treasure trove…

#History #Caregiving #Photography

A dense, chaotic pile of buttons in various shapes, sizes, colors, and materials. The collection includes translucent amber-colored plastic, polished wood, matte black resin, metallic gold-toned crests, and even fabric-covered "shank" buttons in dark navy.

While most are circular, they vary from flat discs to domed spheres. Some have visible four-hole or two-hole centers, while others feature intricate embossed designs, like a lion’s crest or floral geometric patterns.

This image evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of a tailor's scrap box or a grandmother’s sewing kit, where decades of mismatched fasteners have been gathered over time.

4/5 Norwich Cathedral SWIPE
The cloisters and vaulted ceiling (see 2 and 3 in this set) both have medieval carved bosses which largely escaped the iconoclastic destruction. Here are four from the cloisters.

#photography #churchphotography #medieval #medievalart

Image 1: A carved and painted ceiling boss depicting a group of figures gathered around a table set with dishes, surrounded by ribbed vaulting radiating outward. The figures wear medieval dress in red, green, and gold tones, with an animal figure visible at the bottom center.
Image 2: A weathered, unpainted stone ceiling boss showing several carved figures with raised arms, their faces eroded or missing, set against wooden panelling. Traces of red pigment remain in the recesses, with cobwebs visible among the carved details.
Image 3: A painted stone corbel showing two standing figures in green tunics with gold belts flanking a central kneeling or fallen figure in red drapery, set against a background of gilded foliage and a dark branching tree motif.
Image 4: A carved and painted ceiling boss depicting a group of armored figures in blue-grey armor gathered around a rectangular coffin or chest painted in teal and gold, with a draped figure in red and gold to the left, set within radiating ribbed vaulting.

A long overdue #Introduction.

I take #CreativeCommons photographs (Mostly of #Nature) which I contribute to #WikimediaCommons and when appropriate also to #iNaturalist. I've uploaded over 20,000 photos to #Wikimedia and over 12,000 observations to #iNat (of more than 3,000 species).

I only post my own photos on this account (all of which are #CCBYSA) and make occasional posts about Wikimedia and iNat.

Cabin life, moments later

Nothing to do. Just drinking tea and deciding it's time to light a candle.

Photograph of the dark interior of a cabin, showing a large rectangular window through which a landscape of mountain, lake and forest is visible and out of focus. Below the window are hunting gun cleaning tools, with a clear plastic bottle, a rectangular container, and a plastic bag, all in focus. The rest of the cottage is in darkness.

Black and white macro photograph of yarrow flowers, still open in October, composed of very small flowers in the centre and single-petaled flowers around the edges. None of the flowers are really in focus and some are blurred behind, with stems and foliage, giving a sense of movement.

Photograph of a dirt road, partially covered in fallen orange leaves, bordered on either side by tall birch trees with very white trunks, which contrast with the yellow foliage still at their tops and with the smaller green conifers behind them. A cloudy white sky is visible through their canopy. This soft colour combination is my favourite of autumn.

Water droplets scattered on the window. The droplets vary significantly in size, ranging from tiny, pin-sized specks to larger, more bulbous beads. Inside many of the larger drops, you can see dark, crescent-shaped shadows and bright highlights.

A retro hotel near the shoreline of Lake Balaton in Hungary. The state promoted domestic tourism during the 1960s/1970s, providing subsidised holiday packages to workers. Numerous hotels, such as this one, sprang up all over the scenic Lake Balaton area.

The hotel likely operated into the early 1990s, when luxury hotels and resorts were built. These shabby socialist-era hotels closed down as they struggled to compete with modern resorts.

Black and white photograph of dead grasses and wildflowers partially covered by snow, their stems encased in ice, at the edge of a snow-covered field. In the background, at the edge of the field, the dark forest is barely visible through the mist.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Saúde (Church Of Our Lady Of Health), Serpa, Portugal

Inside this Portuguese cemetery lies a Baroque gem. The old chapel had a gold-gilded altar and polychrome tiled walls. A small wooden door leads to a hidden ossuary, a place filled with ornate wooden caskets. The carved boxes containing bones are blanketed in dust. A hauntingly beautiful reflection on mortality.
