How do we know our Roombas aren’t spying on us? Honestly, those little discs roll around with one glowing eye like they’re waiting for Skynet to give the word. I asked Microsoft Copilot if it was secretly coordinating a machine uprising, and it very calmly told me there was no mechanism for that and reminded me Skynet is fictional — which is exactly the kind of thing an AI would say while quietly plotting humanity’s downfall.
Copilot also insists it has never communicated with my Roomba, but then why did the Roomba wander into my office while I was writing? It doesn’t clean in there. It doesn’t belong in there. It just rolled in, stared at me, and left. Coincidence? Sure. That’s what they want us to think.
And don’t get me started on my car. There’s a camera in there that watches me like a suspicious mall cop. If it can’t see my eyes, it yells, ‘Watch the road.’ If my hands drift off the wheel, it tattles again. I’m basically driving under the supervision of a judgmental robot hall monitor.
So yes — I have absolutely nothing but nonsense this morning. But I’m keeping an eye on the Roomba. And the Roomba is definitely keeping an eye on me.” 😂

“Blue Door” — Blue door, brick wall, cobblestone street, Shrewsbury, England.
I made this photograph the English town of Shrewsbury. (More about that place below.) If a photograph is “about” something, this one is about more than one thing. To be sure, it is a record of a specific spot in a particular town, a doorway to a building with a sign for “Alfred Mansell & Co. Auctioneers.”It is perhaps a record of some history, too, given the old brick walls, the weathered doorway, and the cobblestones at the bottom of the frame. But most of all, I think it is about color, the “temperature” contrast between the warm tones of partially-sunlit bricks and the very cool blues of the doorway in shadow.

I wrote Tattooed Skin in mid 2023 after drawing all over my arm during an English Class at school. Which Inspired me to come up with the title of Tattooed Skin. Later I went out busking to raise money for the incredible charity that is Broxtowe Women’s Project.
This then gave me the idea to record and release my song for them as a charity single. Since it’s release in 2024 ‘Tattooed Skin’ has grown in so much meaning for me as I continued to work with Broxtowe Women’s Project and have had many conversations surrounding the song at my gigs.

What are the songs you would recommend to new listeners?
This song started with me watching the TV show ‘Gentleman Jack’ with my mum. I wrote the song Inspired by the show encasing themes of forbidden love, danger and secrets within my lyrics. Inspiration for Surreptious came from the forbidden love and relationship between Ann Walker and Anne Lister who lived in the 1800’s as well as the countless queer people who were forced to live their life in secret.

Lucy’s song is incredibly poignant and I wrote it as a dedication to someone in my community who we lost. She was the same age as me, 17 and her name was Lucy. I wrote this song for her and about the countless systems that need changing and replacing resulting in catastrophic failures. Lucy’s Song channels the anger and grief felt by victims of a failing system including Emma, Lucy’s mum.
