Esta es una fotografía en blanco y negro tomada en picado desde una de las torres de la Clerecía, mirando hacia abajo sobre la Casa de las Conchas, en pleno casco histórico de Salamanca, destacando la piedra de Villamayor, que es mi pueblo.

El punto de vista es cenital, casi vertical, lo que aplana la escena y convierte los tejados en un mosaico de líneas diagonales que atraviesan todo el fotograma. La cámara mira hacia el patio interior del edificio, dejando ver parte de su famosa galería renacentista con arcos y balaustrada de piedra calada, que se distingue en el hueco central de la imagen, entre los faldones de tejado.

Se aprecian varios planos de cubiertas de teja árabe, con distintas orientaciones y alturas, típicas de la trama urbana medieval y renacentista salmantina. En la parte inferior de la imagen se ve el muro principal de la fachada de la Casa de las Conchas, decorado con las características veneras (conchas) talladas en la piedra, además de un escudo heráldico y ventanas con rejería y molduras platerescas. Al fondo, a la derecha, asoman edificios de mayor altura con balcones de forja, propios de la Salamanca del siglo XIX-XX que rodea el centro histórico. En primer término, ya en la base de la fotografía, se distingue parte de la calle empedrada y una pequeña figura humana que aporta escala a la escena.

La foto está tomada por la tarde, donde las sombras son alargadas y marcadas sobre las tejas, y hay una zona de fuerte luz rasante en el muro de piedra de la Casa de las Conchas frente a otras áreas más sombreadas de los tejados circundantes.

El revelado en blanco y negro con un contraste elevado (negros profundos en los huecos de ventanas y el patio, blancos limpios en los muros de piedra) da a la imagen un aire documental y a la vez artístico, resaltando las texturas: la rugosidad de la piedra de Villamayor tallada en veneras, la repetición rítmica de las tejas y la geometría de los tejados frente a la organicidad de la decoración plateresca.

My first-ever visit! What a cool city, with plenty of fountains and green spaces, and lots of rich, fascinating history that I didn’t know or expect. I’ll be sharing some pics, starting with this one, in front of the beautiful facade of Union Station.

La imagen es una fotografía en blanco y negro de la Iglesia de San Esteban en Fuentesecas, tomada al atardecer.

El edificio se alza sobre un pequeño promontorio o cerro, rodeado de un terreno herboso y seco propio del paisaje castellano. La construcción combina piedra caliza y sillarejo, con muros robustos que muestran el desgaste del tiempo. Destaca una torre cuadrada de considerable altura situada a la izquierda, rematada con un tejadillo a cuatro aguas y una veleta con cruz en la cúspide; en su cuerpo superior se aprecian vanos de medio punto geminados que probablemente albergan las campanas. A la derecha se distingue el ábside o cabecera del templo, de planta poligonal, cubierto también con tejado a varias vertientes y coronado por una pequeña cruz. La fachada principal muestra un pórtico de entrada con arco de medio punto y columnas, protegido por un tejadillo saliente.

Al tratarse de una toma al atardecer, el cielo aparece luminoso pero uniforme, casi blanco, generando un fuerte contraste tonal con la piedra oscura del edificio. Esta luz rasante acentúa las texturas de la mampostería y remarca el volumen de la torre frente al resto de la construcción.

En primer plano se observa un sendero o camino asfaltado que asciende hacia la iglesia, flanqueado por una valla metálica baja y vegetación seca. Sobre este camino caminan dos personas, aparentemente una pareja, alejándose del templo. A la izquierda, un pequeño grupo de personas descansa sentado junto a un muro de piedra que delimita el recinto. Al fondo se extiende un paisaje llano y abierto, característico de la meseta, con una torre de tendido eléctrico y algún cableado visible, elementos que introducen un contraste entre lo histórico y lo contemporáneo en la escena.

Cologne Cathedral, the most famous landmark in my home town, is a never-ending (historic) building site: anyone working as a stonemason in the cathedral’s workshop is guaranteed a job for life!
Pictured here is a side entrance to the cathedral with a construction tarpaulin on which the tracery to be restored is printed. Behind it, work is in full swing. No sooner has one section been restored than work moves on to the next. Yes, decay is relentless.

This is a black-and-white photograph of some of the portico in San Luca. It is a long, dramatic hallway framed by a repeating series of vaulted stone arches. The arches repeat into the distance. There is light from the fixtures up above which illumintae the upper curves and also illuminate the stone pavement below.

Local stone carved with Greek letters from 300 BC, Regional Museum of Messina, Sicily, Italy

I found it difficult to imagine some stone carver carving these letters so many centuries ago. It doesn’t seem possible that we can still read their work today.
